Dollar General Is a Part of Americana Worth Saving and Celebrating

TARRS, Pennsylvania -- Five years ago, the plot of land where the Dollar General store sits on Glades Pike was just that: a plot of pastoral greenery located near a row of neatly kept homes in an unincorporated village that once briefly boomed as a coal town.

The store's familiar yellow sign with bold, all-capitalized black letters sits slightly back from rolling Pennsylvania Route 31, which runs parallel to both the turnpike and the Lincoln Highway. For many people in the area, the store serves as a quick stop for a forgotten grocery staple or deeply discounted household goods.

These places match the service provided by the mom and pop general stores that once dotted rural America for two centuries, or the five-and-dime stores that populated small- and medium-sized towns across the country post-Civil War. They serve a purpose unmet by larger supermarkets unwilling to locate to lower-population regions because the regions make no business sense.

I have a dollar store near me. Lots of good hardware stuff there. Also computer and phone accessories. Of course items come and go. Also bought some v good hot sauce that calls itself “Cajun Certified”. Nice and thick, not too vinegary and not crazy hot.

A bigger threat to our supermarkets are the Wal-Marts with full supermarkets...

True, Walmart doesn't have the variety, but for those name-brand products that you use, the prices at Walmart are significantly lower than the big chain supermarkets.

One example is a particular brand of faucet-mounted water filters that I use. Walmart sells a 3-pack of replacement cartridges for less than what the supermarket charges for a 2-pack.

If I took the time, I could easily come up with numerous similar examples.

And I am starting to see these annoying robot devices in big-dollar supermarkets, beeping and blocking aisles as frustrated shoppers try to get around them.

I’ve never seen the robots yet (I don’t do most of the grocery shopping), but I have noticed that Wal-Mart has plenty of name brands when it comes to cereal and such - and at good prices comparatively.

Dollar General is a God send to urban neighborhoods. I serviced them for years in Cincinnati ghettos. For paper goods and necessities they are competitive with WalMart. I also had an urban Kroger that had 90% of the fruits and vegetables spoil year in, year out. People are going to eat what they want. If you want to change inner city eating habits, change what is eligible on EBT cards. If people will buy it, the market will provide it. Chasing out the dollar stores is the most anti poor thing, other than electing democrats, you could do in the inner cities.

A couple of years ago, Dollar General closed the two stores in this town, due to excessive theft.

I live out in the county in between two small towns. They put a Dollar General up on the interstate just about a 1/2 mile from the house. I don’t know about prices, don’t pay any attention but I do know about convenience and it keeps me from having to run into town and deal with Walmart.

Items are cheap China crap, smaller units than grocery or Walmart same items.

All the soda you want and junk food and some questionable dog stuff.

In Tampa, there are two Dollar General within half mile of each other...Nebraska Avenue in Tampa is nicknamed ‘Family Dollar Avenue’, since there’s 6 Family Dollars on the street. We like dollar stores...

Check the prices carefully. I bought toy for my dog at Walmart for 94 cents that was $3 at Dollar General for the same thing.

I like the online sales apps or sites for private sale. No triple taxation. I’d like to see it expanded.

I know exactly where that store is she is profiling. I own property in the area. It has truly been a godsend to the area.

Walmart will be cheaper for most things. Dollar General fills a specific niche - if you have to walk or take the bus or drive 20 miles to the nearest Walmart for one thing you need right now, the Dollar General round the corner will be cheaper or more convenient. They are killing pharmacy margins because Walgreens and CVS rely on non-pharmacy sales to make money. Dollar Tree tried adding a pharmacy to one of their stores and discovered that retail drug dispensing is unprofitable. Pharmacy chains have higher prices than dollar stores on non-pharmacy products but lower overall profit margins. The drag of high pharmacist and pharmacy tech salaries probably accounts for this. So dollar stores are kind of like the old five and dimes except dollar stores are ubiquitous to the point they compete with pharmacies and gas stations in the convenience store segment.

We have Dollar Generals, Dollar Tree, and 99c Only stores. They are all always packed. And yes, you can actually grocery shop at the 99c Only store. They carry fresh produce, milk, bread, and then almost anything else you want. After my dad died my mom did her weekly grocery shopping there. Of course if she wanted a steak or something she had to go to a real grocery store but all her every day stuff was from the 99c Only store.

There’s a Dollar General Distribution center on I-10 in the middle of nowhere, Florida. It’s HUGE! Big as anything Walmart has!................
