Iran has launched what it promised would be a 'crushing revenge' strike against the US over the death of General Soleimani - but succeeded only in damaging two airbases in neighboring Iraq.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired 22 ballistic missiles at the Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq and Erbil International airport in the north in the early hours of Wednesday, but failed to kill a single US or Iraqi solider.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking on Iranian TV shortly after the missiles were launched, described the strikes as 'a slap' and said they 'are not sufficient (for revenge)' while vowing further action to kick US troops out of the region.
But foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the attack was now 'concluded', praising Iran's 'proportionate' response and adding: 'We do not seek escalation or war.'
President Donald Trump is expected to make his own statement on the attacks at 11am Wednesday EST, but tweeted late Tuesday to say 'so far so good' and 'all is well 'as American forces assessed the damage.
Iranian television had tried to claim that 80 'American terrorists' were killed, but that figure was quickly rubbished by Iraqi and US officials.

Not to mention got the hostages released.
B I N G O !
And that’s what this was all about.
I suspect Iran isn’t going to be attacking anything U. S. for a while.
One citizen gets a scratch and there will be HELL to pay, and they know it.
Mission accomplished.
Perhaps you consider your source for this mythical “Iranian warning”
How many thousands of lies does the Fake News need to be caught pushing before you stop blindly accepting everything these say?
No we don't.
Killing their people caught them off guard and they know we have a president who really means business. They don't want none of that.
A very wise decision by the Iranians. Their oil industry survives at least a little while longer.
This could have been a way for Iran to electronically capture our triangulation systems capability, thus having info for later and larger attacks (or maybe give Russia the info). Yes, they obviously didn’t try to hit any of our soldiers or equipment. But no matter if the attack was strategic, or tactical, I still don’t trust the Iranians.
That’s what a lot of his tweets are aimed at.
He likes the other side to think he’s just crazy enough to do “X”.
Iranians, democRats...
RE: Perhaps you consider your source for this mythical Iranian warning
OK, let’s say that the Iranians DID NOT warn Iraq about the strikes.
What were these early warning systems of which Trump spoke of in his speech?
Also, Iran CAN hit targets if they want to. They did it when they attacked Saudi Arabia’s refineries and our own drones from the air. So, they are not incompetent shots.
Trump said that our troops were DISPERSED in his speech this morning. How did our troops know that the missiles were coming in advance to disperse?
Some possibilities:
1) The Iranians DID tell the Iraqis who told us.
2) We have spies on the ground from Iran
3) We do have sophisticated Early Warning Systems that detect missiles to be launched.
[Yeah, sure]
Reagan had to deal with the geopolitics of a more aggressive USSR, which I think tied his hands on occasion. Russia, while still a threat, is not nearly as formidable as an opponent as the USSR was in the ‘80s.
RE: They want to bare their fangs - show they can inflict casualties - without provoking a hugely damaging response.
More importantly, I think they wanted to use this strike as a propaganda to their people that they have done “something” to avenge Soleimani’s death.
They are reporting in their controlled media that they have killed dozens of Americans in their strike ( which MSNBC dutifully parroted, and which they are sure to re-broadcast on their own controlled news ).
Sure, after so many years of Iran killing Americans in several countries and proving its military incompetence at anything other than ambushes and making IEDs. Looks like some people on this side of Iran are whistling in the dark and trying to pave the way with noise to push a policy change towards more appeasement. Well, that’s not going to happen.
The Mooseslums will bloviate but rarely take action that is effective when there are eyes on them. They wait till things are calmed down and we are starting to relax. Their ability to actually wage war with a well trained military is marginal at best so they have to rely on terror tactics.
Ironically because of its pathetic airforce, Iran does have some impressive missiles.
It’s highly doubtful that all 22 (the current count, but who knows) would have missed, unless diliberately aimed off course.
Further in that regard, the Iraqis report that Iran called before the strike and said where they were going to land.
This was a “oh shit Trump will kill us if we really attack” attack.
Brave woman tears down a “Death to America” poster.
The crowd is heard chanting, “Death to the dictator,” in a reference to @Khamenei_ir.
Iranians have no enmity against the U.S. or the American people.
This is a 40-year lie promoted by the mullahs only. #IranProtests

Additionally, it was a good use of old missiles whose expiration dates have passed and they wanted to get rid of anyway. I hear that saber rattling is a popular pastime in those countries.
They used their warheads on a 737
Ya don't say?
