Iran has launched what it promised would be a 'crushing revenge' strike against the US over the death of General Soleimani - but succeeded only in damaging two airbases in neighboring Iraq.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired 22 ballistic missiles at the Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq and Erbil International airport in the north in the early hours of Wednesday, but failed to kill a single US or Iraqi solider.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking on Iranian TV shortly after the missiles were launched, described the strikes as 'a slap' and said they 'are not sufficient (for revenge)' while vowing further action to kick US troops out of the region.
But foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the attack was now 'concluded', praising Iran's 'proportionate' response and adding: 'We do not seek escalation or war.'
President Donald Trump is expected to make his own statement on the attacks at 11am Wednesday EST, but tweeted late Tuesday to say 'so far so good' and 'all is well 'as American forces assessed the damage.
Iranian television had tried to claim that 80 'American terrorists' were killed, but that figure was quickly rubbished by Iraqi and US officials.

Yeah, sure.
Big stick threat used expertly by the President.
In his speech today, Trump mentioned the DISPERSAL of our troops and an Early Warning System that worked very well.
I wonder if the Early warning system was OURS or was the Iranian warning to Iraq that you mentioned.
But WHY would Iran warn Iraq before the missile launch?
It looks like Iran did not want anyone killed ( otherwise why the warning )? They KNOW the consequences of killing Americans.
If so, my suspicions are confirmed. It was a face-saving measure so that they can tell their own people (they control the media there ) that they retaliated for Soleimanis death by killing dozens of our troops. They can even rebroadcast the MSNBC clip that parroted their own propaganda that over 30 of our troops were killed by their strikes.
Whether the Iranians ( many of who are clever enough to bypass their propaganda press ) will believe this is another story.
I do not underestimate the Iranians as “bad shots” ( i.e., they are so incompetent, they can’t even hit targets ). After all, they were able to shot down our drones.
Who could blame them. They have a long history and a lot of cultural sites.
Sorta like when I was a kid and made a crappy throw I meant to do that.
What nonsense.
A small Country with Israel and the USA breathing down its neck doesn’t waste 15 missiles to send a message.
From what I read US systems detected the launch of the ballistic missiles.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
..........
Could be rocket science at work?
“Missed it by that __ much. Sun was in my eyes. How about I meant to do that?” -— Khamenei
They just bought themselves a little time is all. Their real response will take some time to plan it now that their planner is gone.
That said, Trump did the right thing, and we’re not paying the Iranians not to embarrass John Kerry anymore, and Iran’s economy is still choking and they are still being squeezed.
They informed Iraq BEFORE the attack LOL..they did it all for show..to show their people “See we retaliated” they knew what would happen if ONE American life was lost..they knew what Trump would do..they are NOT dealing with Obama, they are not dealing with someone who will just pay them off, those days are over
Just putting off the inevitable.
Hilarious how people here instinctively knew the Mulahs missed on purpose. Meanwhile MSM idiots are just starting to suspect it and praising their brilliance for giving the madman in the White House an out.
Sort of like kicking sand onto Superman’s shoe.
Not only Obama but every POTUS starting with Carter sad to say including Reagan.
On 9/11, after the second plane hit the WTC, there were still network talking heads speculating about some kind of air traffic control computer error.
I read that one missile missed the target by ~20 miles. Whatever the reason, we should be happy that there is an opportunity to avert another unnecessary war.
A lot of Monty Python and the Holy Grail fans around here.
"Tell them that we missed on purpose, just to send a message that we could have done much worse..."
