US Defense Secretary Mark Esper responded on Monday to reports that the US-led coalition to combat the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization has decided to withdraw from Iraq.
"There has been no decision to leave Iraq. Period," he said.
Earlier it was reported that the commander of Task Force Iraq had written a letter to the Iraqis informing them of the decision to withdraw.

The letter was very poorly worded. Given that the vote in IRaq was to ask their own government to ask us to leave, it was premature, the Iraqi government has not yet consulted with us.
A letter saying we were taking preparatory steps in case we were asked to leave made sense, but the letter seemed to go beyond that.

This may have been an exercise in determining who in Iraq is leaking to the media — either among our military brass or among Iraq’s political class.
Would it be too much to hope that this draft was provided to the Gang of 8 with a request to keep confidential, and immediately leaked?
