Trump threatens to slap sanctions on Iraq ‘like they’ve never seen before’

President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to slap sanctions on Iraq after its parliament passed a resolution calling for the government to expel foreign troops from the country.

Tensions in the Middle East spiraled last week after Trump called for a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad that killed a top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, the U.S. president said: “If they do ask us to leave, if we don’t do it in a very friendly basis, we will charge them sanctions like they’ve never seen before ever. It’ll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame.”

I’d much rather see the US just take a bow and leave the stage.

President Trump is right. The second Iraq war was a huge mistake and a complete disaster.

So had better the Iraqi’s. We’ve have expended too much blood and treasure to try to help them after W’s mistake to accept getting the boot without consequence.

Expelling us is the equivalent of them giving us the finger and joining with Iran.

If they want us out of their country, why isn’t that their right?

“A president with a pair!!!!”

We were supposed to have invaded Iraq to give them freedom, according to George Bush. Isn’t refusing to leave at their request, the opposite of freedom? Isn’t that a hostile occupation?

He always said they should have paid us for liberating them from Saddam.

This also tells them we won’t be kicked out, we will leave on our own terms.

Hopefully we will now leave on our own terms.

I’ll assume the question you posed is a serious one.

I must also assume that the many hundreds of men killed and the thousands wounded is assisting Iraq (misguided as I think W was) means nothing to you or you wouldn’t pose such a question.
I must also assume that loyalty and respect for the one who sacrificed so much for your benefit also means nothing to you or, you would not ask such a question.

That level of disrespect and betrayal deserves far harsher punishment than the actions of a confirmed enemy.

Because of the price we paid to liberate the country from Saddam. Iraqi Shiites owe us. It would be as if Western Europe gave us the finger after WWII. The traditional act of countries that do things like Iraq is annexation, pacification and the slaughter of anyone who opposes these actions. We’re not typical conquerors, but this kind of rank ingratitude, combined with their collusion with Iranian attacks on US soil in Iraq (the embassy) demands a strong response.

Why are you asking a Freeper to have a stronger sense of obligation to U.S. military personnel injured or killed in Iraq than the Iraqis themselves?

The conduct of the Iraqi government and a good portion of its citizenry over the last 10+ years has convinced me that they never should have been “liberated” in the first place.

Trump himself has said that Iraq was better off under Saddam. Therefore they owe us nothing.

Back in 2003 the U.S. went into a zoo and killed or captured all the zookeepers. Anyone who is sitting here in 2020 complaining that there are now animals running loose all over the place is a moron.

Iran and Iraq have always been about who can control the country to milk the most cash out of of it. Kind of like the US Government before Trump....maybe it’ll catch on over there.

You may think they owe us nothing. Trump obviously thinks they owe us something - hence the sanctions. Remember - campaign one-liners aren’t actually what people who utter them think. This sanction threat is Trump saying what he truly thinks. Sunni Arabs were better off under Saddam. Shiites were not. Funny thing is - Sunnis and Kurds boycotted the vote. The Kurds obviously benefited from the invasion. Sunni Arabs obviously did not. Yet Sunni Arabs like us better in Iraq than outside of it. Strange bedfellows, eh?
