"Richard Jewell" flops at the box office its opening weekend following controversy

The weekend box office numbers are in, and one particular film flopped after facing controversy ahead of its debut. Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell" raked in only $5 million its opening weekend, about half of what was expected, according to IMDB's Box Office Mojo. The film faced criticism over its depiction of a real-life female reporter, Kathy Scruggs, who is played by actress Olivia Wilde.

"Richard Jewell" follows the story of the titular character, a security guard who was initially hailed as a hero but then suspected of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Jewell was later exonerated. The movie depicts Scruggs, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reporter, offering sex for confidential information from an FBI source about the case.

He died in 2007, so Point 4 is not happening, even as a possibility

I’m a big fan of Clint Eastwood. But it’s hard for me to get excited about a movie when I know ahead of time exactly how it will play out.

A better example would be “Sully”, about a pilot accused of bad piloting and then is exonerated and a hero in the end.

“But it’s hard for me to get excited about a movie when I know ahead of time exactly how it will play out.”

That may be a large part of it, along with the MSM smothering it.

We think about that movie’s story, how it pales compared to what’s been happening to Trump, and we want TODAY’s DS bastards indicted and imprisoned or executed. This movie doesn’t move that along.

But, a movie that showcases today’s rats by name, that motivates today’s patriots to head to DC with torches and pitchforks...

Check the subject reporters reputation.

Seems pretty well established to me.

Very unrealistic - a journalist would never do such a thing

Would a conservative journalist posted different box office gross numbers?

Maybe if Breitbart wrote the story, Richard Jewell would be making hundreds of millions of dollars playing to packed houses?

Probably not.

One of the conservative personalities I follow on Twitter posted succinctly, "Watching Richard Jewell. I'm the only one in the theater."

This film should've went straight to Netflix. That's where it has an audience.

They prefer to watch the movie in the comfort of their own home, without the nonsense that is so prevalent in movie theaters anymore.

That's absolutely the case with me.
I'd imagine that when the film eventually breaks even a year or so down the road that it'll suit Clint just fine.

The movie depicts Scruggs, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reporter, offering sex for confidential information from an FBI source about the case.
——-
It’s clear the FBI agent thinks the offer was at least potentially in exchange for sex, but it seemed ambiguous as to whether they were going to have sex regardless.

My understanding is that in real life the reporter had sex with the FBI agent, and the FBI agent leaked the info to her. The disputed point was whether it was a trade, or just a regular hookup.

Even if a regular hookup, it’s damn unethical of both parties.

We saw it Friday night. Good audience. Wonderful movie. The acting was terrific. The casting was great. I would see it again. It shows media and FBI in bad light. Probably reason for bad reviews.

Wife and I went to see it on Saturday. We loved it.
It’s very well made.

It might have dragged a bit, at the end... but, that’s kind of how the story really was: It went ON and ON, with no satisfactory ending.

Some really good performances from top notch actors.

I was aware of the controversy about the reporter. I actually thought they made her look sympathetic.

SPOILER ALERT: They make it look as if she actually CARED whether Jewel was guilty or not. I doubt any REAL reporters today do that.

Agreed

The press was angry that Clint told the truth

It is a very good movie. Must see if you haven’t yet

Most of us here have known about DerpState’s perfidy for years and years, and because of that the film will hold few (if any) surprises.

Maybe the best argument for getting it to cable ASAP is to have it stumbled upon by the low info creatures out there who might, just might, have their hooded eyes opened to the DC evil.

It was real

Press got caught and they hate it. Trying like mad to say it’s fake

So the film puts this female reporter in a bad light. Is the controversy about something real or the casting of a modern female in a bad light?

The unscrupulous report is a sub-plot. The thrust of the movie is about underhanded FBI agents trying to railroad a man they knew could not have planted the bomb and call in the bomb threat, based on the event timeline. The acted based on a profiler's opinion.
