I set up a VPN server on my network and store streaming functions locally. I’m using it to monitor my 3D printer, but can do that with cameras I set up as well.
There are some advantages to storing remotely and in some applications (like, say, vacation homes you aren’t at most of the year or businesses) it makes sense. Likewise if there is every chance that the intruders will get to and take the recording device/video storage, as was the case with a friend whose house was recently burgled.
However, this has to be balanced against security concerns and “what is my video storage service going to do with my recordings.”
