Nothing in the Constitution appears to require the Senate honor the House’s impeachment articles in any way, delivered or not. It can choose to conduct a trial... if it wishes. But there’s no language in there that says it has to.

Before any trial begins, there should be a vetting of the jury.
1. Senators running for President shouldn’t be allowed to vote - conflict of interest.
2. Likewise, Senators who are political friends or enemies can’t vote. Prejudged the case

With the risk inherent in any debate with a professional “strategic communicator” such as the author of this article, I will disagree on the need for a trial.
A trial will pay the highest respects of our government to the Constitution. It is the Constitution that is under attack, if not seriously threatened. Politically and even legally, the dems grabbed the headlines with a losing agenda; now they are caught under the Senate Leader’s bright light as he and the R's defend the Constitution..
Under the Clinton rules the Dem’s case will rise and fall with the evidence and witnesses they believed supported the filing of impeachment charges. Each of those witnesses in turn would be thoroughly cross-examined by expert White House litigators.
The Senate could then vote on acquittal. The sole issue is whether the impeachment charges as presented are valid. There would be no need to allow the dems to conduct fishing expeditions with additional witnesses or even to allow the Senate to independently call witnesses.
Significantly, the voters will have a clearer view of a substantial amount of the duplicity and underhandedness that motivated the dem effort.
