Dem Rep: I'm 'Not Going to Be Pushed' into Voting for Trump Impeachment

The congresswoman has been listening closely to her constituents who she described as being "definitely engaged" on impeachment, both for and against.

Slotkin needs more time and more context. Over the weekend she plans to look through all those hundreds of pages of reports related to the inquiry, as well as look back at the documents from the impeachment proceedings against Presidents Nixon and Clinton.

Hemmer noted how the impeachment inquiry has "zero Republican support." Slotkin admitted she "doesn't like it" because "bipartisanship is something I really believe in." She said her work both as a CIA officer and a soldier has taught her that "sometimes you have to make calls" not based on polling, but "on integrity."

"If this is the end of my political career, at least I'm doing what I think is right," she said.

Slotkin defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Bishop in November 2018 in a district that had been held by Republicans for nearly two decades. Thirty other Democrats are in a similar boat, with only two willing to come out so far to say they're not voting for impeachment.

Slotkin has been having plenty of tough conversations with her colleagues because "short of a declaration of war," a number of them think "this is the most serious vote they'll ever take."

"A few of us are trying to be thoughtful," she said. "For me this is deadly serious."

The transcript of the phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky was the reason she came out in support of an inquiry. She admitted that while it was "normal" for a U.S. president to ask foreign governments to do things, she discovered at least an "inclination" that Trump wasn't just looking out for the interests of Americans when he asked Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, but for his own personal gain.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that she would not be whipping or pressuring Trump-district Democrats into voting with the majority.

Slotkin said that after talking with her husband, her team and her constituents over the weekend, she will make the call "before close of business on Monday."

Not pushed. A Nancy nudge will do.

I don’t see any sincerity there either. I don’t care if she did serve in the military and in the CIA. The rest of us lead busy lives and we’ve been able to stay tuned in to what’s been going on without any confusion. If she saw something different in the transcript of the September phone call than the rest of us did, then she wasn’t too bright to begin with.

Has she never cared enough to learn about the Nixon or Clinton impeachments before this that she has to have a refresher on those also?

We’re supposed to be impressed with her thoughtfulness but don’t be surprised when she votes YAY for impeachment! She’s making a good impression for now but I don’t know on who!!! Or whom!!!

“”She’s CIA, she’s trained in deception.””

Nicely said! The mention of CIA didn’t do anything to impress me either.

You need to look at her history. She was born in New York and transplanted to Michigan at a young age. She lives in Holly, MI which is in Oakland County and is a mix of liberal and conservative voters.

The district runs from Lansing (liberal) to Detroit (liberal). She was a CIA analyst who worked in the NSA during the Obama administration. Her husband is a vet who flew Apache attack helicopters during the Gulf war.

She will vote for impeachment.

She says her phone calls are split almost 50/50 and with Oakland County’s history of electing a Republican Supervisor, I would bet the bulk of her constituent calls are against impeachment. However, with the close proximity of MSU (Lansing) and Detroit (Wayne County) she is probably getting calls supporting impeachment from the surrounding area.

Bottom line...she voted to open this witch hunt. She will follow the Pelosi/Schiff/Nadler playbook right off the cliff.

I hope the Republicans put up a good candidate this year. She is vulnerable either way.

Democrats want to beat up Trump - soften him up for the election.. . they have ZERO intention of letting this ‘show trail’ go to the Senate ...

Truth can come out in the Senate... dems can’t allow that...

She won’t be the only dem to vote against impeachment.

One thing about Dem congresscritters. They always come first - before country, before their speaker. If this woman’s paycheck is jeopardized by her vote for impeachment, nothing is going to make her vote for impeachment, not even Pelosi being mad at her for a few days. There are 31 of these morons in Trump districts who will throw Pelosi off a cliff if they calculate their vote for impeachment will result in their unemployment come election day.Fun to watch them squirm and catfight

I hope someone delivers a burlap bag to Nancy so she can cover her head and we won’t have to see her face in January sitting behind the president she’ll vote to impeach while he gives the SOTU speech! PLEASE!!! I still wish he would give it on paper - forget about delivering it in person. THAT’s not required - only a report of the state of the nation....Someone could even ride a horse by the Capitol steps and throw a report out on the steps that night!

“”She said her work both as a CIA officer and a soldier””

So who served in the military - her or her husband or both?

For the record...she’s not a vet. She worked for the DOD and the CIA in an analyst capacity. She met her husband, who is a vet, while in Iraq for the DOD.

Most of her district encompasses Lansing. We know how college towns are so it will be a tough call.

With that being said, her opponent received 45,847 less votes in 2018 than he did in 2016 which shows that the only reason she won was because Republicans stayed home. The same goes for Stabenaw and her defeat of John James......

If James runs again against Gary Peters on the Trump ticket, I think he will win.

I agree. Give the SOU speech on paper; hold a massive rally instead. Maybe even deliver the SOU at the rally. Also, don't engage in debates.

I listened to the interview. She was very careful what she said, she said she “honestly” hadn’t made up her mind and wouldn’t do so until she went through all the information. BUT, then got very squishy when she started discussing all the information that had been revealed in the hearings, blah, blah, blah.

………………………………….

I didn’t see that in the transcript.

There was nothing wrong with Bishop, he lost because Republican voters throughout the state stayed home in 2018.

I think they learned a valuable lesson in that their inactions gave the House of Reps to the Dems.....

She is also gone due to Governor Blackface little uprising in Virginia. Lots of people are raising cane in Virginia over the gun ban issue. They will see the D after her name and vote appropriately.

The D problem is that they have made stars out of many Rs who had very salient points against the abuse of power by the Dems’ impeachment attempt.

Impeachment was intended to protect the Presidency.

After the coming indictments against Trump haters and Dems and the abject failure of the impeachment and Mueller efforts, I think the Dems voting for impeachment are going to be out of power for a long time, beyond 2024.
