Impeachment inquiry crossroads: Keep going or time to vote?

WASHINGTON (AP) — They’ve heard enough. With stunning testimony largely complete, the House, the Senate and the president are swiftly moving on to next steps in the historic impeachment inquiry of Donald J. Trump.

“Frankly, I want a trial,” Trump declared Friday, and it looks like he’s going to get it.

Democratic House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s staff and others are compiling the panel’s findings. By early December, the Judiciary Committee is expected to launch its own high-wire hearings to consider articles of impeachment and a formal recommendation of charges.

A vote by the full House could come by Christmas. A Senate trial would follow in 2020.

Congress’ impeachment inquiry, only the fourth in U.S. history, has stitched together what Democrats argue is a relatively simple narrative, of the president leveraging the office for personal political gain, despite Republicans’ assertions that it’s complex, contradictory and unsupported by firsthand testimony.

House Democrats may yet call additional witnesses first, notably John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser. But Senate Republicans are already looking ahead to their turn, the January trial that would follow House approval of impeachment charges.

Should they try to dispatch with such a trial in short order, which they may not have the votes to do, despite holding 53 seats in the 100-member Senate. Or should they stretch it out, disrupting the Democrats’ presidential primaries under the assumption that it helps more than hurts the GOP and Trump.

Every day that goes by the less likely they'll have the votes.

I say they don't and will take another run at "hearings" by Judiciary Committee to convince a hardened electorate.

It sucks to be an elected Democrat.

They are doomed if they do and doomed if they don’t! Surrender is the best option or face certain death or prison for life.

A Senate trial would also expose the stinking Ukrainian corruption - that includes the Bidens, the Clintons, the DNC, the State Dept., and Obama’s efforts to get Ukraine to interfere in the 2016 election

Are the Democrats really prepared for all this to come out??

This could kill the Democrat Party for years

The authors say the Republican’s have two choices, dispatch it in short order or stretch it on in order to hurt Democrats.

No bias by the authors.

I can’t wait until the treason trials after Trump is re-elected.

This excerpt ignores the assertion by House members that they must be given at least one day when their witnesses can be heard. The Republicans will assume that this House rules provision will override Schiff’s assertion that he has veto power over who is called.

I can see why an AP story wouldn’t want to talk about this. There is not a good way to spin it in order to make it look like the proceedings to this point have been fair.

Ridiculous. Beyond wishful thinking. What color is the sky up there?

High officials of the democrat party could be caught plotting to assassinate PDJT, and the only effect would be that Democrat-against-Republican political murder would become legitimate. The MSM would excuse and justify it, and make heroes of the plotters.

The Democrats cannot afford to allow this to go to the Senate. They will calculate it so that they are a few votes short. The Republicans could short circuit this by providing enough votes at the last minute to approve impeachment. A genuine inquiry would expose enough to put dozens in prison.

“No bias by the authors.”

Also evidenced by the “stunning testimony” description.

You cannot impeach based on, “I heard from....”

It would appear that you can.

You are forgetting the Ginsberg factor. The democrats need impeachment to claim President Trump should not be able to nominate a SCJ.

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t” might have been composed for just the situation Schiff and Nancy find themselves in today.
