Analysis - Impeachment inquiry: Trump seemed vulnerable. It didn't last
CBC ^ | 11/21/2019 | Alexander Panetta

Donald Trump's impeachment defences seemed damaged by a series of bombshell testimonials that not even his most implacable protectors could easily explain away.

That lasted about 90 minutes.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Republican Party illustrated just how swiftly, and unreservedly, it intends to close ranks around the president and prevent his ouster from office.

Look at the winning margins of the GOP senators. How many could withstand a 20% to 50% loss in GOP support if they voted for Trump removal? I guarantee if Trump is removed, the GOP base will be so demoralized that a significant number will sit at home - 20% to 50%. (I bet closer to 50%!). Not only would these GOP senate turncoats go down but so would down ticket - from governor to dogcatcher.

Also nothing beats the perks of being a senator (except maybe being Prez & VPrez!). No beltway job, no NGO appointment, no big industry job, no cabinet position, the power, prestige & moo-lah for your supporters Kith & kin would be gone! Unless you retiring and going to the rest home to die you aren’t going to deliberately jeopardize it! Yes there are fools that do, but in group of 55 people there are always a handful of fools!

The whole exercise has 2 goals. Induce TRUMP to make mistakes and say things. Prevent in the future any inquiry into the Obama admin communist corrupt practices and the firing of his traitors in office under presumption of whittle blower benefit protections

The entire premise of this stupid exercise for the Democrats is based on the idiotic idea that it is illegal to investigate Joe Biden's obvious corruption.

It is legal and proper to investigate evidence of corruption against a former office holder, and it is perfectly acceptable to request the assistance of the government of another country where much of the corruption occurred.

All the rest of it is static.

It’s all just politics.

Deep State knows Trump is an existential threat. So they are trying to damage him in any way possible, before the IG Report comes out.

If the IG Report indicates crimes, and if DOJ prosecutes coupsters, Trump wins.

If IG Report is a dud, then it will simply be a mudfest/slugfest from here to Election Day 2020.

Trump has already proven himself an outstanding slugger and mudslinger.

“The steady parade of preening, arrogant, self-important swamp pr***s just reinforced in people’s minds that we were right to send Trump there to clean it out in the first place”

And how many people understand that the Republican side has been denied ANY ability to bring in rebuttal witnesses to this Soviet show trial?

Imagine how fast the house of cards would collapse were that not the case.

Even operating from a severe handicap people like Nunes, Jordan, Ratcliffe, Stefanik and Zeldin have been mercilessly destroying the craven, self serving drivel coming out of the mouths of the State Department functionaries.

They must be talking about the bombshells that came out of Salwells ass during his interview with Chris Matthews. Those were the only bombs dropped by democrats this week.

But, he made a frowny face and fired the ambassador! That isn’t impeachable?

Yes, conviction is in the senate is unlikely but if a number of Republicans turn on Trump it would give the Dems something akin to a PR victory that could damage the president. Republicans in general seem to fear media criticism and quickly collapse at the first sign of it.

I believe that some on “our side” are inclined to do that also because they resent Trump and see him as an “Outsider”. I worry about that scenario.

However, I agree with you that Republican turncoats could have a disastrous effect on the GOP at all levels. Voters would be extremely pissed off and retaliate if more than a handful sided with Democrats against the president.

That said, if the FISA report is as damaging as it is being reported to be it will make it very hard for senate Pubbies to go against Trump in spite of their inclination to do so. As you said, they love their jobs and that is of overriding importance to them. Being forced to leave and be cut off from the Swamp’s lucrative benefits is their single biggest fear. After all, they are there for themselves and not us.

Aye. That’s the truth.

I expect Independents to swing hard toward the POTUS. And quite soon.

Much better than I could ever imagine. I would have given more to his election campaign than I did had I known what a fighter he would be. Trump makes Reagan look like a wimp, which is no easy feat.

Don’t spot them anything, FRiend, because we all know that the only way RATs win is by cheating.

Good job yesterday by Jim Jordan, Mike Turner, and the rest of the GOP reps.

Why can’t we have people that tough in the Senate?

There were no bombshells.

Only the media believed someone's presumptions were bombshells.

We should be thankful that Schiff is so completely inept and without measurable abilities of any kind.

Schiff is beyond incompetent, he's an incompetent political hack.

The Leftist propaganda media loves to compare these hearing to the Watergate scandal with Nixon.

However one cannot, if they lived through this period, begin to compared "Schiff-for-brains" to Peter Rodino, Democratic chairman of the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate nor Sam Irving, Chairman of the Senate judiciary Committee. These men tried and were largely successful in getting bi-partisan support during the hearings so much that Nixon knew he had no chance of winning so he resigned.

Pelosi and"Schiff-for-brains" are behaving more like Rep.Robert Drinan, an radical Jesuit priest who wanted to impeach Nixon for the bombing of Cambodia(Sound familiar to Hastings, Green, Swalewell and AOC) They all already had their "guilty " verdict they just needed a "crime" to sentence Trump with.

This is why the media's comparison is flawed as is the Democrat's impeachment efforts, even if passed in the House will suffer a agonizing death in the Senate.

I see only the likes of Mitts, Collins of Maine and Mirkowski of Alaska voting to convict Trump.

When Sondland was pressured to answer “Who would benefit from an investigation of Biden” he should have named democrat presidential candidates in succession:

Elizabeth Warren
Bernie Sanders
Pete Buttigieg
Kamala Harris
Corey Booker
Tulsi Gabbard
Deval Patrick
Michael Bloomberg
and all the rest

That would have killed the rest of his time on the clock without ever naming President Trump.
