Retired man’s home seized over $8.41 in unpaid property taxes
The Sovereign Man | 11/15/2019 | Simon Black

Are you ready for this week’s absurdity? Here’s our Friday roll-up of the most ridiculous stories from around the world that are threats to your liberty, your finances, and your prosperity.

County government seizes home over $8.41 in unpaid tax

When an 83-year old retiree paid his property taxes late, he miscalculated the interest owed to the county government.

All told, he was $8.41 short. Yes you read that correctly, i.e. less than nine dollars.

So the county seized the home over that trivial amount.

Then they sold the man’s home at auction for $24,500, even though the house was worth about $128,000.

But the county didn’t just keep the $8.41 they were owed. They kept the entire $24,500.

Although this was the most egregious case, the man found out he was far from alone.

The county has been systematically robbing homeowners, selling their homes, and keeping the proceeds over much smaller tax bills than the homes are worth.

In case you’re wondering, the county in question is Oakland County, Michigan, which is part of the Detroit area, and one of the most fiscally vanquished municipalities in the country.

(Detroit even declared bankruptcy in 2013.)

This highlights a very important lesson: when governments are broke, they will plunder the wealth of their citizens in order to make ends meet, even if it means stealing a retired man’s home.

This is big business for cities these days.

Most of the time it makes no headline because the dude who owes also owes mortgage or is gone to jail, but we have given them the power to do that.

How dare this gentleman complain about losing his home over $8 when our valiant politicians are tapping their watches waiting to spend his money on their very important causes?

I pay property tax on property in a city I dont live in. I get no vote on any kind of tax increase that affects me. I think that is BULLSH#@. Cities suck... then counties...

You usually have 5 years... as best to my understanding. Do you need some help or what?

waiting 5 years is usually not so helpful to the tenant (opps I mean owner)
my county charges a late fee and 2% interest per month. that can add up real fast
after a 5 year wait I can’t imagine the cost after going delinquent 5 years in a row.
I’ve helped out my ex (the mother of my children) now for 3 years to keep her from getting those costs.
thankfully she pays me back after a few months

How does the house ultimately go for such a ridiculously low price. Something stinks there.

I simply REFUSE to believe media stories like this, after having been played for 3 years over ‘collusion’, not to mention all of the other fake news. I now figure that there is MUCH MORE to these types of stories than they’re letting on.

If you think this is bad, take a look at what’s going in NYC with seized homes and land banks...

I once lived in a county with two grocery stores as their major retail base. No way sales tax would pay for county services.

Yep, it's a meme now. And a t-shirt. Of course, the next local government that causes a citizen to snap and do something like this will claim innocence, as though previous examples weren't ample warning.

There is an obvious action to take in a case like this. Sadly, we’ve become too ‘civilized’ to make our displeasure known in the proper way.

Defies every ounce of Constitutional private property rights.

No due process. No just compensation for taking property.

Pure evil. May everyone involved burn in hell.

Governor Paul LePage of Maine tried to right this horrible wrong of towns and cities seizing properties for taxes owed and then keeping the excess. He said every municipality fought him on it. It was a cash cow. Like probate is to lawyers and judges.
