Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that the Senate cannot dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, meaning there will be a trial.
“I don’t think there’s any question that we have to take up the matter. The rules of impeachment are very clear, we’ll have to have a trial. My own view is that we should give people the opportunity to put the case on,” McConnell told reporters after being asked about dismissing the articles of impeachment.
Most Republican senators refused to rule out voting to remove Trump from office in an impeachment trial over the Ukraine scandal when contacted by the Daily Caller at the end of October.

Which means there would be no trial — the political equivalent of a mistrial to throw into the mix already including the two-plus years of the Mueller hunt and the ongoing inquiry of U.S. Attorney John Durham into “Russiagate” as the country approaches the 2020 election.
This process — the refusal by the Senate to approve a “Motion to Proceed” — is how the Senate should flush articles of impeachment from the record as it stands today. Invite the House to begin again if it wants to, but using due process if it does, and backed by a bipartisan majority.

Not enough punishment. McConnell needs to be made painfully aware any conviction in the Senate will result in bodies on the street. His, members of the Senate, members of the House.
If anyone thinks playing nice with the threat of "retirement" is going to convince them to not convict Trump, they would be sadly mistaken.

Not holding a Senate trial would be like the defense (the GOP) letting the prosecutor (the Democrats) make all his points to the jury (independent and moderate voters) without rebuttal. It’s a recipe for a guilty verdict (i.e. electoral defeat for the GOP in 2020).
Yeah, I think tying up six Democrat presidential candidates for a while is also a good thing. They’ll probably accuse McConnell of intentionally interfering with their nomination process.

McConnell is identical to Sessions and equally worthless. Both men put Parliamentary procedures over substance. Neither could just govern. Don’t break the rules, but put as much English on the pinball machine you can, so long as you don’t tilt.

Yes, a trial is the last thing Dems want.
Doesn’t the House first have to vote to impeach the President first? If the House does not vote Yea for impeachment, then there is no impeachment to go to the Senate. Therefore McConnell is wrong. Am I missing something?
Here are the key factors. Mitch is up for reelection and he isn’t going to retire.

of Trump’s base. Can you see that many Republicans throwing away their lifestyle, money making career, because
without a crime to excuse voting to impeach Trump the base

He is going to win the election in 2020 and any GOP Rino who votes against Trump will Be DOA.
And lastly it takes 67 Senators to vote for removal.

I contend that the best way to stop the House nonsense in its tracks is to point out that the Senate WILL hold a trial. The first witnesses called, in order, will be (1) Schiff to explain why he lied about the content of the original phone call and what contact he had with the whistle blower, (2) The Whistle blower, (3) the IG of the CIA to explain why the whistle blower rules were changed to allow hearsay testimony and who suggested it, (4) Hunter Biden, (5) Vindman to explain who he talked to and why he shouldn’t face a court martial for sharing classified information with unauthorized persons, and (6) the Ukraine prosecutor who was fired at Joe Biden’s behest.
An announcement to the media tomorrow along these lines would cause Pelosi to shut down the whole mess before next week.
I suspect most people don’t realize that this is a THREAT by McConnell to the Democrats in the House. He’s basically saying that if they forward with impeachment, he’ll have a FAIR TRIAL, where Trump’s people will be calling witnesses and cross-examining people...and the Democrats know that WILL NOT look good, not at all.
I have no doubt, that they want McConnell to NOT have the trial. That way their twisted version of history holds, and they can claim that the Republicans were covering up what Trump did.
This is probably McConnell last warning to the Dems...
