Neil Young wants to become a US citizen and vote in the 2020 presidential election.

But the Canadian singer-songwriter says his citizenship application is being held up because he uses marijuana. "When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test. It was a conversation where I was asked many questions. I answered them truthfully and passed," Young said in a statement on his Neil Young Archives website. "Recently however, I have been told that I must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem."

You are talking about people who were born American losing citizenship. There are people who came to this country and applied for citizenship and it can be revoked and the government used to actively knock them out for double voting

You’re right, but the practice was struck down as unconstitutional in 1967. Other than the natural-born citizenship requirement for the office of President, a citizen is a citizen is a citizen. We cannot have a two-tiered system where naturalized systems are somehow inferior to native ones. Therefore, the law regarding loss of citizenship applies equally no matter how the citizenship was obtained. The only exception is where a person fraudulently obtains naturalization, and in this case, it is deemed that the naturalization never occurred.
