Nearly twenty Berlin police were said to have been brutally attacked by far-left Antifa extremists during a demonstration in one of the city’s strongholds for leftist extremism.
The unidentified Antifa members attacked police in the Friedrichshain area, throwing heavy paving stones at the officers along with bottles and other projectiles, with a total of 19 officers injured during the rioting, Focus reports.

When the attack includes assault with a deadly weapon, the proportionate response will immediately (and usually permanently) stop the threat. I see nothing wrong with that.
Even "extremists" is one or more notches below "terrorists". IMO, a crowd that beats up a communities LE are clearly terrorists.
I guess I meant to say that the response should be 10 times greater than the attack and overwhelming.

Many Winters ago, I saw that, 1968, in Chicago. Chicago PD Tac troopers swinging oak clubs, and blood on the pavement. Funny how everyone ran.
That is a capability they have. One thing you see all over the world but never in the US is rioters throwing Molotov cocktails at the police.
Why? Because they will shoot you. Throwing bricks at US cops will also result in you quickly reaching room temperature.
You raise good points; and it is a given they have the capability.
There remains, of course, the real question of whether sanctuary city administrations, for example, will compromise LE discretion in that regard. Even more, is how anxious green-lighted, street-level LE will be to fire en mass into a crowd just because a brick or cocktail was produced from the center of that crowd.
The formula then would seem to include local approval and abundance of well-placed, leap-frogging overwatch.
There is no question the likes of Antifa are eager to test the limits of our resolve. A few broken heads would suit them just fine, another "Kent State" even better.
I am, but want to add a vhf radio and a couple low-end drones for observing.

The EU, AUS, CAN, MX and the US should get together and declare Antifa to be an international terrorist organization.
Any encounter with Antifa should be met with extreme violence by law enforcement or anyone else.
Yep also it is important to have under covers embedded in the crowed to identify who the ringleaders are so they can be targeted directly.
The most effective riot control device I have seen in action is the full auto pepper ball gun.
It can target an individual in a crowd or can scatter a bunch of miscreants at the same time. Its personal and it hurts.
