Democrats are crowing over last night's results of the special elections in Kentucky and Virginia as some kind of wave election, but it's only partially true.
Kentucky was an anomaly, given that the Republicans ran a weak candidate. Virginia, on the other hand, probably is reason for Republicans to change course. Not by changing their ideas, but by getting busy with the true Republican agenda of cutting the size of the government.
Here's what Virginia looks like right now, according to the gleeful New York Times:
Democrats won complete control of the Virginia government for the first time in a generation on Tuesday and claimed a narrow victory in the Kentucky governor’s race, as Republicans struggled in suburbs where President Trump is increasingly unpopular.
In capturing both chambers of the legislature in Virginia, Democrats have cleared the way for Gov. Ralph S. Northam, who was nearly driven from office earlier this year, to press for measures tightening access to guns and raising the minimum wage that have been stymied by legislative Republicans.
Ahhh, those suburbs. The places where bureaucrats with six-figure salaries from government jobs buy those pricey homes deeper and deeper into Virginia. Expand the government, expand the real estate spread --which as it happens, has moved into the Virginia and Maryland suburbs. Former IRS tea party persecutor Lois Lerner retired a few years ago to this $2.3 million suburban beaut here.

Virginia is the New, New Jersey
Suburbs. NYT never notes GOP did a clean sweep in KY and LA. GOP is struggling?
VA is an outlier due to unfavorable demographics. Trump didnt even campaign in the Old Dominion State.
Dems lost about 5 seats in local elections in NJ.
I was mentioning to my wife this morning that Virginia is the “rich guy extension” of DC. I was not surprised by the results.
South NJ is conservative. Some of the 2018 Blue Wave losses have been made good.
And it's not just about jobs and economic opportunity. It's about freedom, exercise of "Creator-endowed rights and liberties," and opportunity for each citizen, not just self-appointed elitists who fancy themselves as entitled to make decisions for all.
See this web site, at which Richard Frothingham's outstanding 1872 "History of the Rise of the Republic of the United States" may be read on line.
This 600+-page history traces the ideas which gave birth to the American founding. Throughout, Richard Frothingham, the historian, develops the idea that it is "the Christian idea of man" which allowed the philosophy underlying the Declaration of Independence and Constitution to become a reality--an idea which recognizes the individual and the Source of his/her "Creator"-endowed life, liberty and law.
Is there any wonder that the enemies of freedom, the so-called "progressives," do not promote such authentic histories of America? Their philosophy puts something called "the state," or "global interests" as being superior to individuals and requires a political elitist group to decide what role individuals are to play.
In other words, they must turn the Founders' ideas upside-down in order to achieve a common mediocrity for individuals and power for themselves.
Thomas Jefferson wrote to Roger Weightman on June 24, 1826:
" I should, indeed, with peculiar delight, have met and exchanged there congratulations personally with the small band, the remnant of that host of worthies, who joined with us on that day, in the bold and doubtful election we were to make for our country, between submission or the sword; and to have enjoyed with them the consolatory fact, that our fellow citizens, after half a century of experience and prosperity, continue to approve the choice we made. may it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings & security of self-government. That form which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. all eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. the general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view. the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of god. these are grounds of hope for others. for ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.">
The GOP tallied more votes Statewide for both the House of Delegates and the State Senate.
The total votes for the HOD was:
860,794 Republican
823,369 Democrat
55,184 votes for other
For State Senate it was:
843,576 Republican
808,605 Democrat
112,917 other.
The Democrats “won” by getting a Kalifornia Communist “Professor” to gerrymander the maps to benefit the Democrats. Gerrymander is good when it benefits Democrats, it is bad when it benefits Republicans.
Do you see how that works?
This “win” is entirely illegitimate, and nothing that they pass deserves any respect. It’s long past time that the right adopts the #Resist framework.
Two can play that game.
Dems lost about 5 seats in local elections in NJ.
Yep, it is a start
Virginia is becoming the new New Jersey because the influx of wealth from DC, the wealthy libs move into the north, pushing the middle class down south, just what happened to NJ from NYC from the 70’s on. And the democrats pretty much take over the state.
Taxes will go up
Leftist Dogma in the schools
Tolls go up
Gas Taxes will go up
Any people escaping will move to North Carolina
Its New Jersey 2.0
It is the GibMeDat effect. Government “workers” on the taxpayers’ teat. Dependent voters and ferals on the taxpayers’ teat. Pathetic. It is an embarrassment to our great heritage.
I would argue Maryland.
Maryland oozed south and corrupted the Virginia Tidelands.
It is doing the same in North Carolina.
by getting busy with the true Republican agenda of cutting the size of the government
***************
That has never been a true agenda of the Republican Party. And never will be.
I TOTALLY agree!
I’ve said it all along - and what supports the growth of government, its welfare, its crony-capitalists, its myriad of social-engineering schemes which steadily turn the whole country socialist?
Printed, fiat money, courtesy of the Federal Reserve.
Its our monetary system, folks. As long as we print money and create massive debt for government and insiders, this country is going down.
Maryland and Virginia are connected to the DC Swamp. Both are blue. Just like Maryland, Virginia will never be red again.
Bigger and ever expanding government simply creates more Democrat voters who rely on the government benefits. This is why Bevin lost, teachers and state workers voted against him. Starboard is right, both parties expand government, the GOP is slitting their own wrists. We've postponed school competition for a decade or more, our unwillingness or recalcitrance is coming back to haunt us.
Liberals are always talking about how we should all be paying more in taxes, so they’re gonna love this!
Maryland!
My sister lives in Loudon Cty. It’s all immigrants(muslim, paki, Indian) and gov’t employees.
Virginia points to the need to disperse the Federal government bureaus and agencies throughout the country and thereby change the demographics of VA and MD. Centralized government is not good for the nation.
