The Supreme Court on Tuesday rebuffed an appeal from a Christian former high school student who argued coursework on Islam at her Maryland school violated her First Amendment rights.
The dispute involves Caleigh Wood, a student at La Plata High School in Charles County, Maryland, who enrolled in a state-mandated World History course during the 2014-2015 school year.
As part of the class, the then-junior was required to complete coursework on The Muslim World, in which she learned about Islam. Wood took issue with two parts of the class: a PowerPoint presentation that said most Muslims faith is stronger than the average Christian and a fill-in-the-blank worksheet in which she had to write, There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, which she said was in violation of her Christian faith.
Wood refused to complete some of the class assignments, which led to a lower grade.
The school subjected Ms. Wood to this promotional instruction in Islam, and also refused to grand her an opt out or alternative assignment when Ms. Wood, holding fast to her Christian beliefs, refused to write that the Muslim god is the only god, her lawyers said in filings with the Supreme Court.
Wood sued Principal Evelyn Arnold and Vice Principal Shannon Morris in January 2016, alleging her First Amendment rights had been violated.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Arnold and Morris, ruling the teachings at issue did not impermissibly endorse any religion nor did they compel Wood to profess any belief.
“Here is another link to an explanation about how students were required to write out the statement of faith- the shahada- not in response to a question- but as an assignment- They were also required ot learn the 5 pillars of islam...”
And as I pointed out, the text in the link you provided asked for students to accept Jesus performed miracles and wanted them to give an explanation on why someone should convert to Christianity.
These are EXERCISES in comparative religion. NOT a demand anyone agree with anything.
noone in the link was being forced to recite the prayer of conversion that muslims use and take seriously- that’s the difference!
Muslims force peopel to cite those words from the shahada- and consider anyone that says them to be muslim converts afterwardfs- if you can’t see why telling students to recite the conversion prayer or write it out is not acceptable- then whatever- we aren’t muslim apologists here- and we don’t excuse such behavior by schools who know full well what they are making students do!
“and consider anyone that says them to be muslim converts afterwardfs- if you cant see why telling students to recite the conversion prayer or write it out is not acceptable- then whatever- we arent muslim apologists here”
I’m hardly a Muslim apologist. But neither does writing out something for a school assignment make you a believer in ANYTHING. It is not religious oppression for a comparative religion course to have students write out what others believe.
And also . . .
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
“Why are you putting that rusty saw to may neck??? WE SUPPORTED YOU GUYS, MAN! PLEASE DON’T — AAAAaaarrrrrghhh . . .” *gurgle gurgle*
[[But neither does writing out something for a school assignment make you a believer in ANYTHING.]]
You are ignoring the FACT that just stating those words, in the eyes of the muslims- makes the person a convert! Muslims forcing people to say those words under penalty of death if they don’t- doesn’t make hte person a believer either- but in the eyes of muslims- that fact that the person states those words is enough- they consider that person a convert and subject to their laws from there on out-
There is NO EXCUSE for schools forcing kids to cite the conversion prayer of islam! Keep apologizing for the muslims though- it’;s amusing-
“You are ignoring the FACT that just stating those words, in the eyes of the muslims- makes the person a convert!”
Why do you give a rat’s rear what Muslims claim? If Muslims claimed anyone who said “Jesus” was Muslim, would it make it so?
goodbye- I’ve explained over and over again why it isn’t acceptable - you are an obvious islam apologist- ignoring the fact it’s indoctrination and forcing peopel to take an oath which muslims deem as valid- you’ve done nothing but excuse inexcusable behavior!
“you are an obvious islam apologist”
Yep. One that has spent much of his life deployed to various muslim hellholes. But I don’t agree with you - indeed, I don’t know how ANYONE could teach a comparative religion class that would satisfy you - so...call me names. Have at it.
There is one GOD, the Lord Jesus, and we who believe in His finished work of salvation and forgiveness of sins are His messengers[.]
I think thats what I would write if required to. Then, when my answer is marked wrong I would seek redress for discrimination on religious and 1A grounds.
