Bad news bacon lovers.

Virginia-based Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s biggest pork producer, is warning that an outbreak of African swine fever wiping out hog farms in China could result in a stateside shortage of pig belly and even ham next year.

Though the crisis hasn’t impacted the U.S. market yet, that that could change as China is forced to increase imports to satisfy demand in 2020, Bloomberg reports.

The Chinese “are insatiable in their appetite for pork,” Arnold Silver, director of raw materials procurement at Smithfield, said at the Urner Barry Global Protein Summit in Chicago earlier this week.

Prior to the start of the epidemic a year ago, the Asian country a veritable superpower of pork. Experts estimate that by the end of 2019, China's production of pork could be cut in half. "That's roughly 300 million to 350 million pigs lost in China, which is almost a quarter of the world's pork supply," Christine McCracken, a senior analyst at RaboResearch, told NPR. "It's a massive number."

Somebody have figures on HOW MUCH Chinese grown pork is coming into the US? Because we DON”T NEED THEIR FREAKING DISEASES!

Who inspects them OVER THERE for the USDA? Answer: probably nobody.

Somebody who knows— comment please. The very thought of the similar to human illnesses that pigs can carry— disturbing. Trichinosis comes to mind. Cook your pork folks, but better— know where it CAME from first, and choose elsewhere. No way buying smithfield. Stupid VA a@@holes selling out to chicoms and filthy standards. Only thing worse is the clinton pals at Tyson. Screw em both.

“Soylent PIG is PEEEEEPLE!” Can hear Charlton Heston yelling this right now— the olde Soylent Green plant has changed protein source.

“Why don’t we raise pigs here in the US and keep them healthy?”

I love bacon but stopped eating it, because I’m afraid to eat anything from China. I heard their food is filthy.

Iowa, the pig shaped state, is proudly #1. But #3 on your list, Minnesota, may also contribute to the reserve as one of their congresscritters would favor banning internal pork consumption. Although I’d rather export her and her ilk to China than prime bacon.

If Trump’s big deal with China leads to them exporting all our bacon, that could be the election right there!

Bacon one slice at a time? Do you also eat potato chips one at a time?

That’s what I was thinking, along with ‘we don’t have enough pigs here in the U.S.?’ We should, and we should have enough to be exporting them, too. Feed the world bacon, I say!

Hmmm.. IDK. Sure, prices will rise (even higher), but a shortage? I think people will stop eating pig products until they're sure it's safe to do so...
