AN FRANCISCO It was a problem that California had come to dread. Weather models were signaling extreme winds and dry conditions from one end of the state to the other. The risk of wildfires was high.
Pacific Gas & Electric, the giant utility whose power lines and transformers have been blamed for a series of disastrous wildfires in recent years, was determined to prevent another one. Just before last weekend, the company informed state officials that it might shut off power to a large area of Northern California, potentially leaving millions of people in the dark something no United States utility had done in recent memory. It made that news public on Monday.

Racism!!!!
“While people and companies with means could turn to businesses like Ms. Maynes for backup power, many others did not have that luxury. When they tried to get more information, answers were often not forthcoming.”
Fire requires 2 things, spark and fuel. The Government supplied all the fuel with their forest management practices, PG&E just the spark.
But the poor gentleman who died 9 minutes in because they shut his oxygen off, can practice nothing
This is serving as a wonderful preview for what implementation of the Green New Deal would result in.
California seems to be experiencing great difficulties.
Will these reach as many as “The 10 PLAGUES OF EGYPT?”
Things did not go well, according to PG&E spokesman Charlie Foxtrot...
Very sad but did he die from lack of power or was it just his time? If you cannot live 9 minutes without power, perhaps you should have a backup plan; you own generator, be in a facility that has one, seek other shelter when they gave more than 72 hours notice. This guy would be dead if a squirrel shorted out a transformer or a texting mom struck a power pole. To rely utterly on a quasi-government entity like PG&E (they cannot do anything without a government’s board approval) is insanity or certain death.
Californians who voted for LIB asshats: Enjoy the suck.
I can’t imagine Californians taking this so well. Try this in Texas and Austin would be nothing but ashes.
Don’t see any problem. Doesn’t every CA’ian homeowner have solar panels on the roof, and monster batteries in the basement, with backup windmill in the backyard?
If it’s windy enough to shut the power, the windmills will supply everything.
And, if everything goes caput, at least they can drive their coal-powered electric cars to a shelter...
Calizuela.
It would only cost a trillion dollars or so to bring social justice to this utility.
They would need to identify all customers by race.
Then they could have a second set of utility lines built for all blacks and hispanics.
Then those lines could keep operating during power outages!
(I hereby accept the nomination as Chairman of the Board of the new Social Justice Utility of The People!)
The fella who died was someone else’s grandfather. No one gets outraged. Just a few family members. Do the asshats care? They’ll find a way to move on.
Residents were left asking why so many people had to lose power and whether rolling blackouts would become routine as climate change makes wildfires more frequent and intense.
PG&E preferentially shut off the power in conservative areas, liberal enclaves were largely spared.
Is Climate Change in the NYTs style manual or what? They never miss a chance to put it in a article.
Not allowed to have batteries. You have to put excess on the grid and guess what, they dont compensate you for it.
Keep your fuel tanks full.
