A white Fort Worth officer fatally shot a black woman inside her home early Saturday after police were called to the house to do a welfare check, according to police and the neighbor who called them.
The woman who was killed was Atatiana Jefferson, 28, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiners Office.
Police released a statement Saturday afternoon saying officers responded at 2:25 a.m. to a report the front door of a home was open in the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue. James Smith, who called a non-emergency police number, said he saw the doors were open and the lights were on, which struck him as unusual. He knew Jefferson, his neighbor, was home with her 8-year-old nephew.
Police parked around the corner, so the woman couldnt see them, according to Smith, 62. About 15 minutes later, he said, he heard a loud bang and saw several more officers rush inside.
Body camera video released by police on Saturday shows two police officers using flashlights to check the perimeter of the home, inspecting multiple doors that are open with a screen door closed. In the back of home, one officer appears to see a figure through a dark window, and he quickly twists his body to the left.
Put your hands up! Show me your hands! he shouts through the window, his gun drawn. He then fires a single shot through the window.
He does not identify himself as a police officer in the video.
Police said in the statement that the officer, who joined the department in April 2018, saw a person standing inside the home near a window.
Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence, the statement said.

I was thinking of a cop a few years ago who was laughing about popping a dog and turned up in Oklahoma. He was probably a special kind of psycho. A moderate kind of psycho only has to go a few extra miles.
It says in the story that a neighbor saw the door open in the middle of the night and thought it was cause for concern so he called the cops.
they would get hired by different a county, like a couple minutes over usually. Somebody knew them and Now lets pick them up. No, no, no, he has really strong sadistic tendencies and fantasies of rape and murder, you really shouldnt hire him and they would.
Another good person lost. And she was a premed student.
Think of all the lives she might’ve helped to save.
Tragic!!!
For crying out loud! Are they not screening perspective cops before they hire them?
It doesn't matter if she was holding a weapon. She is standing in her own house! The officer did not identify himself! For all she knew, he was a peeping Tom prowling in her back yard while she was alone with an eight-year-old! What is with these DFW cops?
That was my question, too. But now I think of it, many of the beliefs of modern psychology are crazy, in and of themselves.
a welfare check is when you knock on the door to make sure the resident is ok.
I try everything I can to defend LEO’s but this one I can’t defend, and sadly it’s becoming a pattern among LEO’s.
Bad shoot, period.
The cop didn’t bother ringing the doorbell or knocking on the front door first.
The cop didn’t bother announcing himself as a Police Officer.
The cop walked around to the side and backyard at night with a flashlight prowling around IN THE SAME MANNER AS A BURGLAR.
The cop saw the LAWFUL RESIDENT of the home IN HER BEDROOM, and doesn’t finish barking the order to “Show your hands” before he MURDERED her in her own bedroom.
Even if Johnson had pointed a weapon at the cop, the cop’s failure to identify himself BEFORE prowling around the yard at night gave her every RIGHT to point a gun (and shoot at if need be) the cop.
Give this POS that Ft. Worth is calling a cop as much of a trial as he gave Johnson before putting him in front of a firing squad.
You left out: The cop shot into an occupied house.
The old tried and true “I was in fear of my life” is not going to cut it for him.
It may not be a perfect tool, but weeding out as many as possible is still worth it.
Think about that the next time you’re involved in a traffic stop...
I’ll go with “throw down gun”
Particularly as the cop knew he screwed up.
Lousy cops like this one just give more ammo and credence to those out there who call to have LEO’s completely disarmed like the Brits did to their cops.......
Until LEO’s as a whole work to ACTIVELY purge their departments of those persons who are not fit to be cops, this movement will only grow stronger until they are no longer given a choice - and it will only put the lives of those LEO’s who are good and honorable in danger.
She’s in her own home and the cops show up and she gets shot?! That’s some shoddy police work there.
Until now Fort Worth police have been fairly clear racist BS.
Cop is guilty of murder, plain and simple! Too many what-ifs. What if the resident was just looking out to see what was going on outside? What if an innocent relative was there checking on her mom and peered out the window? What if a child was looking out? What if a resident didn't understand English and couldn't respond to commands? Way to many what-ifs, for a cop to simply blast away at a window from outside. Murder! Messed up for sure.
They wonder why nobody likes them.

I am seriously beginning to wonder if there is anything police officers do not perceive as a threat.
