Pacific Gas & Electric Company shareholders are facing the possibility of a worst-case scenario -- the value of their holdings getting completely wiped out -- after a federal bankruptcy judges ruling.

re: “over the last few decades Texas has built them and sells such power to Calif.”
No.
NO SUCH facilities, “power lines” run between Texas and California.
Fact.
You cannot move the super high voltage lines on towers to underground......
Why not?
If you’re not a EE or power engineer, you won’t understand the terms “high dielectric loss” and “high line-charging currents”.
AND these are seen before any useful power transfer through such lines occur.
If youre not a EE or power engineer, you wont understand the terms high dielectric loss and high line-charging currents.
Thanks for assuming Im stupid. Maybe you could explain it to this idiot layman in a way I might understand. You know, something like current loss in an underground setting would be several orders of magnitude greater than in a aerial situation thus making it a very inefficient means of moving high voltage across long distances.
If you did something like that I would most likely say something like thanks for the explanation. I understand now.
But you didnt.
Jerk.

Truth hurts; deal it with salve or aspirin.
Truth hurts; deal it with salve or aspirin.
The difference being that I can learn about things like dielectric current loss, thus curing my ignorance on the subject.
In your case, however, no amount of additional schooling could possible teach you how not to be a jerk. With you that goes straight to the core.
Now do enjoy the rest of your day.

re: “Now do enjoy the rest of your day.”
I always do. I’m not sure everyone else does though ...
And as always, (to quote Louis Rossmann) I hope you learned something.
Im not sure everyone else does though ...
Id bet they dont. Being around jerks, especially jerks who dont realize quite how tiresome their jerkness is, very trying for those around them.

Cost - plus far more voltage drop than in overhead lines over distance.
Thanks. I doubt that PG&E would even attempt it. Theyd be sued a thousand times over a mole or a bug or something before the first shovel touched dirt.
L
For sure!
OMG, you are right. That would be first class irony.
I did not realize it was the super high voltage lines. I would think they would be placed in areas with wide, extensive and cleared rights of way. Oh well!!
You are correct - that is where they are placed.......but still, they cross highways, rivers, and much more where burying them would bankrupt every utility.
The other thing is look and you will see that the high big transmission towers are sometime in multiples of 3 or 4, some carrying paired (double) lines in parallel.
I know a place near an interstate not far from us that has 3 high towers, 2 with dual lines, and a 3rd with dual-dual - or 4 lines per phase.
That would mean burying 18 - separate super high-voltage lines in each right-of-way (ROW). ONe cannot imagine the cost.....or time......many years of construction - perhaps a decade......
