(CNN) — In a remarkable announcement late Sunday night, the White House said that United States forces in northern Syria would move aside in advance of a planned Turkish military offensive.

The move marks a major shift in US foreign policy and effectively gives Turkey the green light to attack US-backed Kurdish forces. The group, long considered as among Washington's most reliable partners in Syria, has played a key strategic role in the campaign against Isis in the region.

Following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the White House said that Turkey would soon begin a military offensive and US forces would not be involved in the operation.

"Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria," a statement said. "The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial 'Caliphate,' will no longer be in the immediate area.

Actually, Linda agrees with you.

He'll be gravely concerned, he will furrow his eyebrows, and then he'll suck up to the White House like he always does. He doesn't have a spine.

Really? You really think the Turks will attack us if we don;'t get our troops out of another country?

So we have to cower in front of mighty Turkey? Our NATO "ally" is going to attack us if we don't leave Syria?

That's how far we've fallen in the eyes in the world, that if we don't leave, Turkey will start slaughtering US troops?

Remember February of last year, when the Russian "mercenaries" attacked our Green Berets and Marines in Syria? How did that work out for those Russians? You probably have never heard of the battle, so I will give you the Cliff's notes version: Our troops on the ground, along with the Air Force, slaughtered hundreds, and none of our guys were killed. I'm not even sure if any were seriously wounded.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

The United States was supposed to be in Syria for 30 days, that was many years ago. We stayed and got deeper and deeper into battle with no aim in sight. When I arrived in Washington, ISIS was running rampant in the area. We quickly defeated 100% of the ISIS Caliphate,.....

....including capturing thousands of ISIS fighters, mostly from Europe. But Europe did not want them back, they said you keep them USA! I said “NO, we did you a great favor and now you want us to hold them in U.S. prisons at tremendous cost. They are yours for trials.” They.....

.....again said “NO,” thinking, as usual, that the U.S. is always the “sucker,” on NATO, on Trade, on everything. The Kurds fought with us, but were paid massive amounts of money and equipment to do so. They have been fighting Turkey for decades. I held off this fight for....

....almost 3 years, but it is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars, many of them tribal, and bring our soldiers home. WE WILL FIGHT WHERE IT IS TO OUR BENEFIT, AND ONLY FIGHT TO WIN. Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds will now have to.....

...figure the situation out, and what they want to do with the captured ISIS fighters in their “neighborhood.” They all hate ISIS, have been enemies for years. We are 7000 miles away and will crush ISIS again if they come anywhere near us!

Finally, with real foreign policy under a strong president, the United States is demonstrating strength, determination, resolve and agility in Syria and for the Kurds.

“having defeated the ISIS territorial ‘Caliphate”

Not true. They still have elements hunkered down in places no one - Syria, or the Kurds yet occupy.

Turkey is NOT entering Syria to finish off ISIS.

Turkey occupied Afrin in Northern Syria.

It became a haven for ISIS and Al Queda remnants retreating from Kurds and/or Assad. Turkey allowed them to eliminate the Kurds in Afrin province as much as they could - so Erdogan didn’t have lose his own troops doing it. Those ISIS and Al Queda remnannts in Afrin got their arms from Turkey.

Afrin later started receiving the ISIS refugees that gave up whole villages to Assad and/or the Kurds.

Afrin - with all its radical remnants - will be the spear coming out of Afrin to protect the Turkish assault.

That assault is directed at NO ONE but the Kurds.

Our retreat effectively eliminates any bargaining tool we have over any outcome in Syria.

The Kurds will be right to never ally with us again. They will now be squeezed between Assad, Erdogan and the Mullahs in Tehran, and on their own in those conflicts to come.

Is our departure necessary, for our own troops or our own interest? NO.

Had we told Erdogan we were not moving any of our forces out of Northern Syria and his forces clash with ours the price will be on him, not us.

Erdogan would have cancelled his offensive, and our special forces in Syria would not have been in greater danger, from Assad or Russia.

That makes this move unexplicable, other than the 2020 elections are coming up.

There will be so many other reasons I will still vote for Trump and no one else next year.

But this action will not be one of the reasons.

“I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if Turkey just snuffed all the ISIS vermin.”

Won’t happen. He aided them, from the start.

When we and the Kurds, or Assad, defeated an area run by Al Queda or ISIS, the took refuge under Erdogan in the northeast of Syria he controls.

Erdohgan paid and organized them to elminate the Kurds in Afrim.

He will now do the same in any area he takes from the Kurds.

ISIS will grow again and become a threat again in Iraq.

All Erdogan cares about is going after the Kurds. Period.

“We’ll see. Fox News is reporting that Turkey will take custody of the prisoners we’re holding. That would be a good thing. “

Why a “good thing”. Erdogan just wants them for the gangs he will create against the Kurds!!!

“I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if Turkey just snuffed all the ISIS vermin.”

Erdogan is not going into northern Syria to go after ISIS.

They have refuge under him now in the northern Syria area around Afrin.

Erdogan is ONLY going into Syria to go after the Kurds, period. He has NO other objective, and he will USE ISIS in that effort. He would be happy sharing northern Syria with ISIS.

TOTALLY what it will be.

President Trump Announces Turkish Unilateral Invasion of Northern Syria…

Posted on  by

Things are about to get very interesting and very uncomfortable for NATO.  President Trump has announced that Turkey is about to launch a unilateral invasion into Northern Syria… There is going to be a scramble amid many geopolitical interests.

First, the announcement:

[White House]  –  Today, President Donald J. Trump spoke with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey by telephone. Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria.

The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial “Caliphate,” will no longer be in the immediate area.

The United States Government has pressed France, Germany, and other European nations, from which many captured ISIS fighters came, to take them back, but they did not want them and refused.

The United States will not hold them for what could be many years and great cost to the United States taxpayer. Turkey will now be responsible for all ISIS fighters in the area captured over the past two years in the wake of the defeat of the territorial “Caliphate” by the United States.  (more)

Next let’s establish the foundation for the scramble:

♦ There was a 2014 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) voted and approved by Senate committee permitting military action in Syria against the backdrop of chemical weapon use and terrorism – it never went anywhere.  The Obama administration used the Bush-era AUMF directed at combating terrorism. With ISIS defeated by President Trump that sketchy 2002 interventionist authorization ends.

♦ Also remember in October 2014 then Vice-President Biden accidentally told the truth when he told an audience that Recep Erdogan was specifically responsible for the rise of ISIS in Syria; and that Turkey had actually armed al-Qaeda, al-Nusra, ISIS, and provided assistance.

With the European nations, NATO allies, refusing to take their ISIS fighters back as prisoners, President Trump has made a deal with Erdogan to take them.

In the announcement President Trump has made it clear that any action by Turkey into Syria is unilateral; there will be no assistance by the U.S. on any aspect; including if Turkey is counter-attacked by Russia/Syria or organized Kurdish forces.

Essentially, Trump is leaving Erdogan naked to a myriad of his enemies if Erdogan does cross the border.  The U.S. part of the NATO shield is removed.  The Europeans will likely not evoke the NATO defense treaty without the U.S.  Heck, the EU is essentially spineless without the power of the U.S. military.

President Trump is calling out the duplicity of the entire situation by calling all of their bluffs.  President Trump is calling-out: NATO, weak EU ‘allies’ and Turkey.

In essence, this White House announcement is a major Gordian knot being cut.

It is unlikely President Erdogan expected to have this framework made so public.  This rather loud declaration by President Trump seems strategic in that it could make duplicitous Erdogan think twice about the actual military invasion itself.

However, Erdogan is also a rabid ideologue and he wants to recreate the Ottoman empire… so he’ll likely go ahead regardless of cost.

Down the road…. instead of those ISIS prisoners being held in European jails; and considering the sympathetic Turkish handlers; those ISIS fighters will eventually make their way home without anyone knowing.   However, the EU has created that issue by refusing to step-up and take ownership.

That same weak European mindset could likely be facing another challenge surrounding what to do about NATO if Turkey loses this gamble.   However, again, another issue created by Europe.

FUBAR.

…But we’re out!
