New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham unveiled a plan Wednesday to make public college tuition free for all state residents.
Its a an absolute game-changer for the state, according to Grisham, a Democrat. Experts say it may well provide an example of good practice for state and local officials across the country who are crafting their own free college programs.
If state lawmakers approve the proposal, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship program will pay for all state-college tuition and fees that arent already covered by federal grants and a state lottery. Thats an unpaid gap ranging from 25% to 40% of a students tuition bill. The program doesnt cover students living expenses.
The program could underwrite tuition for the estimated 55,000 students at the states 29 public universities and community colleges as soon as fall 2020. The program will cost between $25 and $35 million a year. The state will pay for the program through its general fund, a Grisham spokeswoman told MarketWatch. She noted oil and gas revenue have been boosting the fund in recent years.

The public schools and the MSM have done such a thorough job that the university hardly has to struggle making kids into Communist automatons
In addition this is nothing more than an illegal political kickback to universities and teachers unions (Democrats)
Well stated, let's do it again.
Its already that. You can bet only approved Colleges will be eligible. This is the kind of BS you get from the Rats. Compulsory taxpayer funding for having your kids brainwashed.
Yes I did. B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from New Mexico Tech. One of the best engineering, physics, and astrophysics education available.
So the people of the great state of New Mexico are on the hook for the rest of the money.
That is just great! The Demorats are such scum.
Tuition and fees at UNM is $7,500. If the student gets 75% through grants and scholarships that leaves $1,875 out of pocket. 35,000,000 / 55,000 = $650. Somebody is lying about the finances of this program. And that was the best case. At only 25% grant money the student must pay $5,625. Liar, liar, your panties are on fire.
I like deserts.... From Central VA. LOL. I assume you have been in a desert at some time. Probably briefly. Remember taking your family to the beach? Remember how the sand was in EVERYTHING? Think about it. Its like living on the beach. Every where you go its like going to the beach. At home it is a constant battle to keep the sand out. I loved growing up in New Mexico. Dont get me wrong. Loading our .22s on the back porch to go rabbit shooting at (not hunting you cant hardly hit a running jack rabbit so its all fun) as a 13 year old. Deer hunting with my dad. Spelunking. It was great. I dont miss the sand.
Humidity sucks. The temperature in VA is always 2. 2 hot or 2 cold.
re: “What happens to the money if Democrats win and stop fracking? “
What happens if a new energy source comes about?
Of course you are correct. Humidity seriously sucks. I confess, I had no idea what humidity was until I was almost 20. I really struggled with it for a long time. Then I went to Jump School at Fort Benning in July. That fixed it. It really comes down to how you prefer your underwear. Gritty with sand or soaked in sweat.
I was in Israel twice and it’s hot but the shade provides great relief. When it’s humid the shade doesn’t really make you feel any better. There is no escape. Nighttime is worse. You can’t sleep. Thank God for AC.
Tennessee has a program where if students meet the standards and comply with the program, they can get up to two years of college education through the community college system. They have to maintain a “B” average and perform a small amount of volunteer hours prior to each semester. It does not include the cost of books.
It is geared towards trade-type programs, where if the person chooses to not pursue a bachelors degree they will at least have an associates and formal training in a technical skill.
A professor told me one time that the proportion of students who wouldn’t do the work has increased over the years, as has the proportion who fail but demand special treatment (including higher grades) anyway.
Makes me glad I didn’t go into teaching.
In relatively short order, this would diminish the country's poor investment in residential colleges. Among other useful effects, the country's residential colleges would have to focus their attention on costs and the delivery of genuine educational value to students.
Finland has nearly free college for all citizens. Over 80% graduate and they have very good colleges.
Sounds good huh? Now the only problem is that there are so many graduates that most of them can’t get any sort of job aside from retail, for those who can find a job.
Here in Texas City the high school has a program which certifies students to operate heavy machinery like bulldozers, cranes, skid steer etc. which skills are in heavy demand in Texas. A good job right out of High school!

Multiply that by 55,000 and tell me what youve accomplished with free college.

You mean aside from Paul’s continued support via voting, an unconstitutional growth of govt & the economic servitude (guess I repeated myself there) of the taxpayers?
Rest assured the money will most likely come from taxes on the most profitable areas of New Mexico, the oil and gas industries.
That is how it works in Oklahoma. As parts of the oil rights ownership, your share of oil production may be $2,000 a month.
After dozens of Oklahoma “taxes” are taken out you may get $100-200 of that.
They’ll pay through the Nose when/if they get a Real Job
Ok, so they have some tech schools that are world class. I didn’t know that. I was just thinking on terms of major universities and couldn’t think of any.
