Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a Democratic presidential candidate, argued that his support for "democratic socialism" is not the same as the form of socialism that the government has imposed in countries such as Venezuela and Cuba.
Sanders made his comments during the presidential debate on Thursday evening. The senator was asked why he hasn't called Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro a dictator and if his socialist policy proposals are different from the socialist policies in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
"Anybody who does what Maduro does is a vicious tyrant. What we need now is international and regional cooperation for free elections in Venezuela so that the people of that country can make -- can create their own future. In terms of democratic socialism, to equate what goes on in Venezuela with what I believe is extremely unfair. I'll tell you what I believe in terms of democratic socialism," Sanders said.
"I agree with what goes on in Canada and in Scandinavia, guaranteeing health care to all people as a human right. I believe that the United States should not be the only major country on earth not to provide paid family and medical leave. I believe that every worker in this country deserves a living wage and that we expand the trade union movement," he added.

Exactly. If the government paid Hubby and me each $1000 a month in addition to our other sources of income (pension, etc.) I’d quit working. My daughter was talking to a woman once who believed the government should give everybody in the country a place to live and enough to eat all free. Daughter asked “why would I work if everything is provided free?” The woman could not comprehend that. She thought people would continue working to “contribute their share.” My daughter just laughed at her.
I’ve had a leftist tell me the “Union of Soviet Socialist Republic” and the “National German Socialist Workers Party” were not “socialist”.
Even when the name includes “Socialist”, leftists deny it’s socialist.
Leftism truly is a severe & violent mental disorder.
Bernie also LOVED the USSR spent half s honeymoon there Bernie is a commie lover, socialism IS socialism there are NOT different kinds of communism and socialism GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK!!! The damn people in this country are SO STUPID they are running around in Mao shirts and have absolutely NO IDEA the history of the person they so PROUDLY wear on their shirt!!! The cost of their education and the STUPIDITY they come out with after 4 years at a university is just shameful, OMG most of us have a high school education EQUAL to a BA of today!!!
What worker in the United States does not get a "living wage"? What exactly, does that mean?
People who are working in the United States are not starving.
Their children go to free schools. They have cars, air conditioning, often free food, and inexpensive, good clothing.
The people that are hurting fall into a number of groups. Here are common causes:
1. They are single mothers who find it difficult to work and care for children together.
2. They are drug or alcohol addicted people who spend a significant part of their income on their addictions.
3. They are mentally impaired.
4. They live in places where regulations have made the cost of housing so high, it takes most of their income.
5. They have medical bills that take most of their income.
People who are working in the United States would be considered upper middle class in most of the rest of the world.
THIS.
Jordan Peterson -- who is, admittedly a clinical psychologist and not an economist -- has pointed out that it is a symptom of every system of production that 20% of the people will provide 80% of the value.
Karl Marx looked at "capitalism" and saw that 20% of the people owned about 80% of the stuff. He concluded that "capitalism" was flawed and needed to be replaced. If you look at the USSR, Red China, Cuba, Venezuela, etc. you are likely to find that 20% of the people own about 80% of the stuff. This is just how systems of production work out.
Inequality and laziness aren't going away. And some people are just high achievers. The only way to attempt any sort of balance is to use violence to punish the high achievers. But even then we would still find that 20% of the people owned about 80% of the stuff -- but there would be "less stuff" because so many high achievers had been killed.
Even distribution is a myth. You cannot make a world of equality. But you can make a world of Freedom -- if you stay away from socialism.
Sweden and Denmark continued Nazi policies of forced serialization for those deemed unworthy into the 1960s and 1970s. That fits with Bernie’s recent comments about support for 3rd world eugenics.
In other words he’ll be a nice all powerful emperor.
That kind of thinking goes back at least as far as Rousseau who basically thought all people would good and that all people would do the right thing if you just gave them a chance.
Rousseau (and his modern day equivalents) have failed to understand human nature. But it sounds like your daughter understands it just fine.
You mean sterilization??
I believe in Iceland today, there is no one with Down's Syndrome. Because they just kill them all. 100%.
All Socialist ideas start off like Bernie but eventually end up like Venezuela.
The only Socialism that has ever worked is the Israeli Kibbutz system.
Israel was a dump after WW2 and it needed to be rebuilt from scratch.
The Kibbutz system gave people a community and a place call home as they rebuilt Israel.
It worked because if they didn’t unify, the Arabs would have taken the land back from them.
The Secret of Bernies Millions
How did he amass three houses and a net worth approaching at least $2 million? The surprisingly conventional middle-class climbing of a radical-sounding socialist.

There is no democracy in democratic socialism
Just as there is no liberty in postmodernist liberalism
Bernie said that standing in line for a meager ration of bread in a socialist country is better than people going to a grocery store and finding an abundance of food. Of course, the socialist ruling class gets the best of everything and everyone else gets crumbs.
Socialism is a system that surrenders power to the most powerful. Authority is thereby maintained with power, eg control through violence and intimidation.
Under socialism, those in power accrue wealth to themselves first. Controlling a country’s economics is fundamental to maintaining control of the people.
Socialism is government by the law of those in authority. It is oligarchic, tyrannical, and clandestine. There are no examples of socialism outside these parameters.
Bernie Sanders has demonstrated, by his actions, that he is interested in acquiring wealth. He currently owns more than a million dollars in real estate, acquired since running for president. His wife destroyed the finances of Burlington college with her misguided greed. Her $200 thousand severance package was clearly a buyout of her contract. These are not people who I would put in charge of my local food store.
The shooting part is only later, for those that do not obey the memo...
I was wondering how many posts it would take to note that the Venezuelans voted in Hugo Chavez on the basis of promises similar to Bernie’s.
How are elected incompetent people in a socialist/Communist environment capable of running a fair government and economic system?
They will either favor their favorite group or themselves until they die or are assassinated?
They never learn because they don't want to learn. These are progressives who will never progress.
