California landlords would no longer be allowed to reject prospective tenants solely because they hold federal Section 8 housing vouchers under a bill passed by the state Legislature on Wednesday.
300,000 Californians who receive the vouchers. The program provides the largest direct federal subsidy for low-income tenants.
Why do we continue to criminalize and penalize and have bias against people who are poor?
My guess is these legislators have never rented to a section 8 family.
Yah, you get your rent but it doesnt make up for the damage they do.
Then when they leave and move on to destroy someone elses property they leave your house full of trash and filth.
You are typically in the hole at least a few thousand dollars of repairs and clean up. Probably some pest control services as well.
Most of these vermin dont care about your property because they know that they will not be held responsible for the damage they do.
exactamundo!
I have a niece. 35 years old. 2 kids. 2 different Daddy’s and has Section 8 housing. They live in an Apartment.
She has never had a job, only source of income is child support of 1 of the Daddy’s and of course government help.
She’s has NEVER had a job. I doubt if she ever will.
So what happens to her when she is 50 an both kids are gone. Does she still get government money?
And if that’s the case, why do we have ANY homeless?
Property Rights??
Only for ME and NOT for thee!
Commiefornia. Giving true meaning to the term “Third World Sh*thole”.
I see a potiential business model here. A firm could provide a rental history check. In essence, a landlord could require the prospective rentor to go to a third party for a rating as to their history of renting. Model it after a credit score.
Renter would have to apply and would be required to fill out an online form, agency would then check with prior landlords / appartment complexes. Some type of rating system. Leave an appartment trashed and your score is lowered. Have the police frequently called out, again lowered. No complaints, keep the place clean, pay your bills, higher score.
“One way around it is to require a high minimum credit score of ALL applicants, but if youre caught waiving it for the right tenant you can be hauled into court and fined”
I wonder what THE STATE WILL ALLOW in terms of the amount of security deposit that can be requested? One would hope the last months rent up front is on the table as well??
“Cheap rent brings cheap renters...” as my father used to say.
One of my friend filled two 15 yard dumpsters with trash after a section 8 family moved out of one of his rentals.
So what happens to her when she is 50 an both kids are gone. Does she still get government money?
...
My guess is she’ll go on disability when the child welfare dries up.
Another directive
It's the same with the Group Home mess. An owner sets up a group home for people who can't live independently. Sometimes they're good neighbors, providing for people with limited abilities. But some of them are "recovered" drug addicts, etc.
Will Condos be the way around it?
There is one house on my block that was sold to a real estate “investor” about 15 years ago.
He split it into 3 apartments and started renting Section 8.
At least twice since then he has had to basically gut and remodel the entire place after a tenant moved out.
One family lived there with a slutty 18-ish daughter. She would ply and cajole local hormone-laden yutes into fighting for her affections. You could set your watch by a loud fight outside that house every night, 30 minutes after bar closing time when a spruned beau would show up beating on the door, challenging the one in her bed to fisticuffs.
I was amazed that house did not mysteriously burn down. The only one on the block that has been any trouble.
Just run a credit check. That pretty much sorts out everything.
I predict that there will soon be a shortage of rentals in California.
As the ‘housing crisis’ intensifies, there will be calls to seize apartments, houses, etc. to achieve this necessary goal. Someone with more skill than me will soon post the comrade’s picture from Dr Zhivago.
If you have to waive a credit check for the right tenant, then that tenant is all wrong. I know.
The Constitution has been repealed...
Well that will certainly encourage more rental properties.
Snort.
I predict that eventually credit scores themselves will be banned. For being RAAAAAACIST.
