My father-in-law is 95. A life-long Democrat supporter who only knew how to pull the lever for a Democrat candidate. We (his daughter/my wife & I) finally got him to see the reality about his beloved Democrat Party by telling him to pay attention to what they do, not what they say they will do. He voted for Trump, not Hillary, as a result.

Often times older people remember the party as it was, and have no clue what the party really is now because they just do not pay attention, and haven't for many years.

It is interesting to me that my parents siblings are/were mostly conservative republicans. My read on my parents is that their position is based on abortion. My mom worked for a general practitioner in the 1960’s before abortion was legal in all states. As part of her job, she helped arrange abortions for teen age girls either helping them to facilities in NY or helping them secure them in CT for medical reasons.

My working theory is that because republicans stand on abortion is that it is immoral, my parents cannot accept that. They then look to all the negative they can find on a republican to support their position so they never have to face the fact that abortion is wrong.

I think many die hard democrats have either direct or indirect connections with abortion that causes them to be irrational about their choices.
