In a clear victory for consumer choice, the Trump administration's Department of Energy rolled back Obama-era rules that mandated the use of LED light bulbs.
The Hill:
DOE argued its rule will have little impact given the increasing demand for LED bulbs, which use less electricity than many other types.
This rule does not prevent consumers from buying the lamps they desire, including efficient options, the agency wrote in the rule. The market is successfully transitioning to LEDs regardless of government regulation. Consumers are clearly taking advantage of the energy savings provided by LEDs.
A senior DOE official told reporters that concerns may be overstated and the new rule would not have a large impact on the market.
This regulation gives consumers more choices, and consumers are better off with more choices, he said.

“Me too I was hesitant because 1 bulb costed me like 11 bucks “
Cost is way down now.
a day late and a dollar short: LED bulbs have finally been improved to the point that one can buy high quality LED bulbs of brightness equal to incandescents as well as color profiles equal to incandescents (3500K), though i now prefer the 3000K bulbs. likewise one can buy high output 3000K 4 & 8 fluorescent tubes that put out more lumens/watt than LEDs ...
“I never purchased LED’s since they look like crap in whatever fixture you place them in.”
They look just like the old bulbs!
Yes LED Technology has become mainstream. Yes its Good that we are more free of govt regulation.
Or maybe LED technology is good enough now to produce enough lumens from one or more LEDs.
Same here, i've had to replace 3 out of 25 and in Nov. they will be 4 full years use.
“We hate LED bulbs and are delighted to see these regulations bite the dust.”
It doesn’t matter. You won’t be seeing much of anything except LEDs on the shelves anymore.
Now toilets....
This de-regulation move should drive down the price of all bulbs--which has been insane for several years.
“Is it possible the governments coercive action has yielded a better net result than if it had stayed on the sidelines?”
This could be one of those exceedingly rare situations where that’s the case.
Thanks I’ll check it out
I own a large office building built back in the mid 70’s I commercially rent out
Replaced all the old 6 foot ceiling lights with LED’s 3 years ago because the transformers were no longer being made.
I pay the utilities. Was mad I had to change them until I got the electric bill
Wish I had done it earlier-huge huge savings plus better lighting with the LED’s
I would think 100 watt bulbs would be great for (normal) greenhouses too - maybe 60 watt for chicken coops?
Don’t know. Just a guess. I seem to recall some used them to keep chickens warm in cold weather.
“My church saved $80,000 per year on the electric bill by relamping with LEDs.”
My office building electric bill was literally cut in half.
Yup.
60-Watt Equivalent A19 Non-Dimmable LED Light Bulb Daylight (8-Pack) $9.94
