Black voters to 2020 Democrats: Don’t take us for granted
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 3, 2019 | Tyrone Beason

Posted on 09/03/2019 3:26:13 PM PDT by KingofZion

Oriana Powell’s decision not to vote in the 2016 presidential election haunts her. ***

“I didn’t really contemplate what that would mean — giving it to the other side,” said the 30-year-old Democrat and Detroit native. ***

There’s just one problem: Many of her fellow African American voters, a core segment of this state’s Democratic base, also believe the party let them down. In Detroit in 2016, voter turnout dipped compared with the two previous presidential elections.

The love just wasn’t there for Hillary Clinton the way it was for Barack Obama among black voters in Michigan, or in traditional urban strongholds in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where Trump eked out the victories that put him in the White House.

This time feels different. African Americans here — working moms like Powell, LGBTQ people, workers in the gig economy — expressed deep passion about voting in 2020. But Democrats can’t take them for granted. Voters in this city, which is 80% African American, say they’re fed up with helping Democrats win, only to be undermined, sidelined or forgotten later. They want assurances that the 2020 presidential candidates will deliver on promises that help get them elected. ***

Other voters, disappointed over the Democrats’ failure to fix key problems in the black community, such as high jobless rates, rampant home foreclosures, poor schools and business decline, may be harder to bring back. ***

John Ware, an African American who’s been living in the same working-class section of southwest Detroit since the 1960s, isn’t sold.

“They’re all liars,” said Ware, 56.

He didn’t vote in 2016 and feels so exasperated with politicians that he doesn’t know what they could say to get him to vote next year.

Democrats’ failure to fix key problems in the black community, such as high jobless rates, rampant home foreclosures, poor schools and business decline, may be harder to bring back.

The Democrats have chosen the teachers' union over blacks precisely because they know blacks won't vote Republican and absolutely can be taken for granted. Every time you hear a Democrat say they will "put more money in the classroom" what they mean is more money in the mostly white pockets of union teachers. Crap schools in black neighborhoods? Deal with it. DeBlasio is gonna shut down any alternatives open to blacks in New York.

And you want jobs? Your black Democrat President said your jobs are gone and aren't coming back. But Trump is bring the jobs back. Will that get you to vote Republican? Thought so.

Most blacks will still vote Dem and calls the Republicans racist.
Now they either ignore , or are ignorant to history since it is the party they vote for which was against the civil rights , for slavery, and segregation.

Even after all of the government (democrat???) failure in the cities the residents don’t see the light. Until that happens thiMgs will only get worse.

“Black voters to 2020 Democrats: Don’t take us for granted”

yep. just like Hillary and the Dems took the union vote for granted in 2016 ...

so, another big negative factor for the Dems in 2020: they SHOULD be so busy desperately trying to hold on to SEVERAL groups (blacks, hispanics, unions, jews, youths, women, et. al.) that they’ve traditionally taken for granted but haven’t yet deserted the Dems, that they’re hardly in a position to coax back large numbers of voters that they already lost to Trump in 2016 ...

“Because he’s a big-dawg alpha-male, and black men respect that.”

i think there’s a lot of truth in that, and the same goes for Hispanic males ... Plus, a significant portion of both groups are at the lower end of the socio-economic scale, so many of those are going to have a natural propensity to root for anyone who’s stands up to the establishment and sticks it to “the man”, which Trump is certainly doing in both cases ...

and of course that’s generally the same group who benefits the most from the full-employment economy and consequent rising wages and improved treatment of workers ...

The Rats don't care in the least that so many black *citizens* have to compete for jobs with wetbacks that get paid under the table...no withholdings.

Disagree. Kamala is already fading (no chance in hell for top of ticket) and if Warren or another woman is on top then it will be a white man under. No way Dems will run 2 women.

Please.

90% minimum will pull the lever by the D.

Never in world history has a demographic been so consistently taken for granted for good reason.

Really? I cant see what would make them believe that.

Sure, they'll "say" they're voting for the Kamala, or Stacy Abrams, or Big Mike Obama, but that's only to please their wives/girlfriends/mothers/grandmothers. When they get into the privacy of the voting booth, they'll vote for The Man, Donald J. Trump.

You're pretty accurate in your statement.

I meet three "new friends" at a Labor Day grill out at a good friend's home.

All three knew I was a big Trump supporter. During short private conversations in the kitchen, while getting a fresh beer, they all congratulated me for being a Trump supporter and confessed their "undercover allegiance" to what you refer to as Trump's alpha-male personality. As they described it.. they really liked his "kick a$$" approach to dealing with things.

Two of the three men I encountered were African-Americans... so you're right in that respect!

Today I was in a long line at the bank beside a Black Obama woman in her 60s. We got to talking. She came out in favor of sharingthe wealth.

I responded that some people worry of the size of the other guy’s slice of the pie. Other people want to increase the size of the pie. Trump is tryig to increase the size of the pie with more people employed and less unemployment.

She responded, Well if Trump is trying to increase the size of the pie, I’m for him.

I’ve had positive reaction in the past to framing this comparison. It made me realize that how we frame the story means a world of difference.

Arguing that if a rich people earn the money honestly it is their money is technically correct, but not convincing anyone to switch... unless they suddenly become rich.

But framing it like Reagan did: A rising tide lifts all boats. That is a winning message.

Stacy is building a massive fund raising structure. It is both non-profit ... to pay her salary and fight non-political issues like voter registration .... and a political operation.

But it is the donor lists that count. Democrats are far behind Republicans in both small and big donations. The Black slave might just buy her master.

If they are serious, they would be wise to consider voting Trump, as they have jobs and economic success because of his policies.
