Fresh from the same Dept. of Energy and EPA that gave us:toilets that dont flush; light bulbs that dont light; dishwashers that dont wash; plant-based fuel that burns like carrots; and paper straws that dissolve in liquid . Now we get this:
[ ] Energy Star, the federal program from the DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency, said the coolest you should keep your home is 78 degrees when youre home.
When youre at work or away, the program recommends setting it at 85 degrees. When youre sleeping, Energy Star said to set the thermostat at 82 degrees. (link)
Setting the thermostat at 82° at night is well recognized grounds for divorce. I swear these administrative state progressives are going to have us force-fed sustainable algae cakes if this keeps up.
Some journalist-type person published these new cooling standards on twitter, and the responses are quite funny.
I see weve decided to give up on sleeping. Or going home for that matter. Or having pets that arent native to the rain forest. (link)
Ive already embraced a dying Earth, so I keep my central air between 67-72 at all times. (link)
Id be laying there making a giant sweat angel in my bed (link)
New report shows these as the recommended temps for smelling like an onion. (link)
I have no idea how my ancestors survived deserts. If the thermostat in my house showed a number that started with an 8 I would call the police (link)

If they try to implement this we will be reduced to going back to "swamp coolers" (Yes, they still work in normally dry West Texas)
Sign, if we ignore it, will it go away.
Remember when they outlawed Edison's light bulb?
And now that “smart houses” exist they will know when you’ve disobeyed their energy edict and send you a fine. Watch and see.
Heck, even Jimmy Carter let us keep the daytime thermostat at 78 during summer.
Molon labe. And kiss my ass.
That was a lot easier than ripping out everyone’s central air or stealing all of their window and portable ACs :)
And see what republican EVER gets elected again if they wanted to monitor ALL of our thermostats.
But you’re right, in 10 to 20 years all of these will be gone and if they set standards for ACs to blow no lower than 82, that would do it.
And there would be NO REASON to buy it in HUGE SWATHS of the country.
There’s not something REPLACING it, like the light bulb, that some companies could make a fortune off of.
This will STOP sales in their TRACKS.
Why would I get an AC for the 40 days it’s above 88 in NY every year?
Please dont put long continuous lines of text. It destroys the readability of the post. The FR program doesnt wrap the text and that line of text causes the entire post to shrink to 10% of its normal size and become unreadable.
Why should I use electric heat to warm my house up in the summer? My air conditioner is an open window.
Send you a fine?
Maybe for your first offense. After that, they send you a SWAT Team to help you get your mind right.
For the third offense, you get a free ride on the boxcar.
This is what’s coming if we ever elect this crowd. A lot of the newer thermostats are wi-fi capable and it’s not totally crazy to predict that the government will insist on having access to our thermostats and taxing us extra for not having it set to the “approved” temperature.
Stock up on old school mechanical bitmetal and coil thermostats. They’ll be worth a lot of the black market after the imperial senate mandates the new Darth Miser smart thermostats
I lived in NM for many years, most of it was in Silver City. It was over 6,000 feet elevation and mountain tops near by were over 9,000 ft. Natural air conditioning. Like you, only about 3 weeks a year when AC was needed and swamp coolers were more than adequate. And very cheap to operate.
I own a home at the farm that I plan to move back into in the spring. When I complete upgrades. When it was built there were no swamp coolers as such. They had window pads on some windows and an exhaust fan in the center of the house that drew air from the windows unto the space in the attic area and it exhausted in the attic vents. Very efficient. And there was NO EPA or Department of Energy. When my ancestors moved to this part of Texas in 1889, (the county was cut up in 1885) there were no roads (only trails), no electric power, little water and it was a very harsh place to settle. A number of branches of that hardy group still live here.
They Department of Energy and EPA can pound sand.
Except for themselves, of course.
See post 2 for prophecy.
Will do, though not sure about the text shrink, looks identical to the replied to post (size).

If it’s on 82, I won’t be sleeping.
Yep, that is the plan. Forced compliance to big brother (or sister).
Cant wait wit to see the recommended temperature in the winter....
Yes, more of the same.
Yes, and Jimmy was the worst president until Obozo.
The only idea I liked was to knock off mowing the grass.
