Big Govt Publishes New Cooling Standards: Thermostat Should Be Set to 82 Degrees When Sleeping
The Conservative Treehouse ^ | August 19, 2019 | sundance

Posted on 08/20/2019 5:07:06 AM PDT by Texas Fossil

Fresh from the same Dept. of Energy and EPA that gave us:toilets that don’t flush; light bulbs that don’t light; dishwashers that don’t wash; plant-based fuel that burns like carrots; and paper straws that dissolve in liquid….  Now we get this:

[…] Energy Star, the federal program from the DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency, said the coolest you should keep your home is 78 degrees when you’re home.

When you’re at work or away, the program recommends setting it at 85 degrees. When you’re sleeping, Energy Star said to set the thermostat at 82 degrees. (link)

Setting the thermostat at 82° at night is well recognized grounds for divorce. I swear these administrative state progressives are going to have us force-fed sustainable algae cakes if this keeps up.

Some journalist-type person published these new cooling standards on twitter, and the responses are quite funny.

“I see we’ve decided to give up on sleeping. Or going home for that matter. Or having pets that aren’t native to the rain forest.” (link)

“I’ve already embraced a dying Earth, so I keep my central air between 67-72 at all times.” (link)

“I’d be laying there making a giant sweat angel in my bed” (link)

“New report shows these as the recommended temps for smelling like an onion.” (link)

I have no idea how my ancestors survived deserts. If the thermostat in my house showed a number that started with an 8 I would call the police” (link)

They already have systems that shut down your AC during peak demand periods.

82 degrees might be ok as a sleeping temperature IF that is the heat index (”feels like”) temperature.

In areas like mine, of often high (stifling) humidity, we’ll be taking showers 3-4 times a day, under these “Standards”. So much for conservation.

We all don’t live in the mountains. I did for many years and appreciate the effect. Unfortunately, God Blessed Texas with too few mountains. smile.

I’ve been down that road, President Carter. Stay away from my thermostat and my gas pedal.

This is step one. Next step is to start mandating these "standards". After that, electricity monitors and thermostats that they can remotely control.

The answer? Vote for real conservatives.

OH, yes and the tax goes to pay the enforcers.

Some of which will learn that it is an unhealthy job.

Got to be a misprint. 78/82 is insane hot in the house. When it reaches 70 indoors, in winter, I’m baking. As it is, when the bill arrives, I’m steaming. :(

Yeah thanks but no, I’ll keep it at 68 overnight.

If it ever came to “smart” regulation just keep a small heater under the thermostat, it won’t shut off.

It’s bothered me that A/C’s are set by temperature. Depending on the moisture level, 70 can be stifling, while 80 is quite comfortable. I’ve had to lower my central A/C by a degree or two because the system was just not running enough to remove the water.

Seems to me A/C’s should have a relative humidity selector... humidistat.

Our electric coop is efficiently run and not corrupt. Our rate is 5.8 cents per KWH. I run it as low as I want whenever I want. Screw these government nitwits.

Citizen, you will be given 1 lump of coal per week and be joyous about it.
All hail the glorious leader AOC.

We’ll return these northern liberals the favor: No winter heat settings above 55 degrees.

...Why should I use electric heat to warm my house up in the summer? My air conditioner is an open window.

Live in the deep south sometime
8 Years in New Orleans taught me to appreciate AC
