Greenland, the new U.S. Alaska? U.S. has been interested in acquiring this real estate for years

Greenland, with a population of only 56,000 inhabitants, is the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1985, Greenland left the European Economic Community (EEC) upon achieving self-rule, as it did not agree with the EEC’s commercial fishing regulations.

In 2009, the territory gained self-rule with provisions for assuming responsibility for self-government of judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources. Denmark maintains control of foreign affairs and defense matters. Denmark upholds the annual bloc grant of 3.2 billion Danish kroner, but as Greenland begins to collect revenues from its natural resources, the grant will gradually be diminished. This is considered to be a step toward eventual full independence from Denmark.

The United States’ interest in Greenland is not new. In 1867, Secretary of State William Seward, then of the Andrew Johnson administration, showed interest in purchasing Greenland and Iceland from Denmark. He also negotiated the Alaska Purchase with the Russian Empire for $7.2 million, which was finalized on March 30, 1867. Seward was an ardent expansionist. In the summer of the same year, he was negotiating with Denmark for the acquisition of St. Thomas and St. John (of today's U.S. Virgin Islands), but the treaty, although agreed, was never effected. When it was finalized in January1917, the selling price was $25 million (the equivalent to $575.61 million in 2018 dollars). In March 1917, the United States took possession of the islands.

As for Greenland, its connection to Denmark was severed early in World War II, when in April 1940 Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. In April 1941, the United States occupied Greenland to defend it against the invasion by Germany. The U.S. occupation of Greenland lasted until 1945.

IF the LIB eco-lunatics are correct about their beloved “globull warming”, this would be a great deal. Actually, it would be a great deal anyway. Give them socialist loser puerto rico in exchange.

The Louisiana Purchase was controversial at the time. Jefferson was the “strict constructionist,” and the Constitution doesn’t say anything about the Federal government buying territory from other countries. Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans maintained that it was covered under the treaty-making power, and that is the view that ultimately prevailed.

"Did I mention perfect basing for missile defense?"

Our missile defense is already there, at Thule Air Base.

With the curvature of the Earth, it is 5 miles closer to Seattle than New York City. Pretty much dead center over the Continental USA, heading toward the North Pole.

I think it's a great idea, just buy it.

Do it before the Chinese buy it.

If it becomes a State and gets two senators, would they be Democrats or Republicans?

It depends on how many Americans move there, and who they are. I bet there would be some good jobs to be had.

But would China, Russia and/or the EU enter into a bidding war? Since Denmark in is the EU there are presumably limited trade incentives that Trump could sweeten the pot with—unless they could actually be channeled through some sort of Greenland conduit loophole.

The "eyes and ears" are of no value without the ability to shoot back.

I'm referring to anti-missiles!!!!

Supposedly rare earth interests in Greenland, and China has been trying to corner the market in that realm.

RE: I think it’s a great idea, just buy it.

Two hurdles:

1) How much ?

2) Will the Danes agree to sell?

3) Have they asked the citizens of Greenland whether they want to be under the USA?

Here’s the fly in the ointment — WHAT DO THE CITIZENS OF GREENLAND THINK?

*THAT* is the bottom line.

Let them remain Danish citizens in a US territory. Maybe some sort of suzerainty agreement could be reached with Denmark.

There was a significant US presence in Greenland during WW2. The famous polar pilot Bernt Balchen joined the Air Corps and was the commander of the air bases. He wrote a book about it.

Nearly unanimous support for the idea when democrat Harry Truman wanted to buy it for $100m in gold.

Greenland is also one of the few places with large rare Earth deposits outside of China or Chinese controlled areas like Afghanistan.

On YouTube there is a site that is about sailing to and around Greenland. Very informative and entertaining.
One episode is here:

Drake Roberts puts many videos out, on his sailing. I find they can be addictive. ;^}
