Md. family, son with special needs asked to leave Outback Steakhouse due to son's 'noises'

Glen Burnie, Md. (WJLA) - A family says they are left heartbroken and saddened after they were asked to leave an Outback Steakhouse restaurant in Glen Burnie, Maryland on Saturday night because of their son who has neurological challenges.

Amanda Braun's son, Killian, was born with a neurological disorder that affects his speech called Childhood Apraxia of Speech. The disorder affects Killian in many ways especially communication and behavior.

Sometimes when he speaks, his words are unclear.

However, Amanda says she's never had problems before the incident at Outback occurred and that Killian was not acting out of the ordinary.

"Our son stayed with us in our booth. There weren’t many people around us as we were seated in the very back of the restaurant to accommodate our party size" said Amanda. She admits there was some noise but that it wasn't constant.

She says moments after dinner arrived, they were approached by a manager and ultimately asked to leave.

Of course there are no complaints. They cater to kids first. I wouldn’t expect them to be any different. At McDonald’s I am talking about the Kid playroom. Of course it should be filled with loud kids having a great time doing kid stuff. It’s for kids.
But Outback doesn’t have a playground. Or a time out section. Common sense says it’s probably NOT going to be a kiddieland.
THAT’S what is missing- COMMON SENSE

I went to a restaurant a while back. Standing, waiting for the hostess a couple with about a 13 year old daughter comes in behind me. Brat starts screaming curse words. I turned and shouted back hey, shut the hell up. Indignant parents said, how could you, she has tourettes I said I don’t give a damn, control your brat. What the hell ya bringing her out here for then. they left.

I sure hope all of your kids are perfect little angels.

outback is what i would call a dinner house. People who have kids, disabled or otherwise should take that into consideration. people don’t want to spend Filet prices and have their dinner ruined by nearby noises.

A $10 gift card is no substitute for being able to peacefully enjoy a $100 steak dinner

The comments on Yahoo were universally against this woman and for the restaurant - mostly by parents and including parents of SN kids

Humbles parent are childless. He was born a nasty curmudgeon.

That said, I am glad I don’t have to suffer your classless self righteous entitled behavior. When you bring a screaming kid, special needs or not and ruin other peoples dining experience you are a grade A Prime a-hole. I dare say a real Fredo. Get take out and consider other people. If your whole family is like you, I am glad they live in the trailer park they are in and are not my neighbors. CLASSLESS.

Families who have chosen not to murder (abort) their child with unique challenges should be the very ones us conservatives are championing.

What if I let them live but put them in a deep dark asylum?

Parents are generally used to the sounds and sound levels of their own children. What’s “normal” for them to hear is anything but to others in the restaurant.

that’s not the point!! This woman thinks she and her “special” kid come b4 other people who also paid for their meal.
“Special need “ is the new race card.

It’s quite annoying when there is a loud, continuous “noise” every 3 minutes.

I’m with Outback. The mother should have known better.

I sure hope all of your kids are perfect little angels.

There's a huge range of acceptable and unacceptable public behavior in between "perfect little angels", and loudly screaming obscenities.

"Special Needs" is not the root password to social interaction.

Common sense has ceased to be common.

That is exactly right. And COMMON SENSE SHOULD guide people. Thank you!

Ding ding ding
And or order Outback to go and enjoy the food at home because having a squirming grunting screamer is hardly....ambiance

This is the most a-holish post you’ve ever written. And that was hard to do. I’m sure you’re proud.

The sound her son makes were not out of the ordinary for her. Maybe it bothered other people.. I know when I go out to eat I don’t want to hear a bunch of noise from children or other people.. I don’t know what dinners cost at outback Steak Houses but if your dropping $60-70 you don’t want indigestion...

Always a heartbreaking and difficult call.

A good friend of mine has two sons who are both autistic.

It has been extremely difficult to get him to join the family at family gatherings - he’s a K-12 schoolmate of my nephew; and he worked with me some years back. He told me that him and his wife do not take the family out much. Sad.

For parents who have selflessly taken on that burden, it would seem that eating at home would be a piece of cake.

I'm amazed that you were able to reproduce! I would never have believed it, had you not admitted to this fact yourself. Now please excuse me... I have a dinner date at Chili's. I think I'll order the Ptomaine au Gratin...and a fine Chablis. 🥙🍾
