WASHINGTONImmigrants legally in the U.S. will be ineligible for green cards if they use any of an array of social programs, and prospective immigrants will be barred from entry if they cant convince a consular officer that they will never use such programs, as part of a final rule published by the Trump administration.
The rule, issued by the Department of Homeland Security, is one of the most ambitious and sweeping elements of the Trump administrations immigration policy, according to administration officials as well as immigrant-rights advocates opposed to the change.
The administration was all but guaranteeing fresh criticism from immigration groups for opting to push ahead in the wake of shootings in El Paso, Texas, that were apparently motivated by anti-immigrant animus. Similar sentiments were expressed after Immigration and Customs Enforcement carried out raids on food processing plants in Mississippi last week.
The rule change tightens the definition of who is likely to become a public charge under immigration law, a designation that prevents an immigrant from obtaining legal permanent residence, and which is also used by the Justice and State departments to determine which noncitizens can be removed from the country or prevented from ever entering.
Use or potential use of a benefits program such as Medicaid, housing assistance or food stamps could now disqualify an applicant, including around 900,000 immigrants currently in the U.S.

When my wife applied for a green card I had to certify that I woud be financially responsible for her for a period of years (5??). These turd world parasites it is said are costing us and our children approximately 60,000 per year, more for asylum seekers. What a fleecing we take. Insane government—facilitated by we the citizenry with our heads somewhere other than where they should be. We are all fools. Our children will suffer.
I guess sponsorship has already been watered down as to become meaningless.
The taxpayer is basically subsidizing these people to have kids while those same taxpayers can’t afford to have their own.
Its insane.
“Jimmuh Cauter Supreme Court made that ruling when Texas tried to stop illegals walking across the border every day to go to school free.”
Maybe SCOTUS did that during Carter’s presidency, but it couldn’t be called “Carter’s Supreme Court”; Carter is the only president in U.S. history to have served at least four years and not to have appointed a single member of SCOTUS. Those liberal SCOTUS decisions from 1977-80 were by justices appointed by Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.
It’s disqualifying because it’s illegal. Doh!
Australia does it.
Canada does it.
Ef em.
Do It Now.
We have little time left.
Won’t stand up in court, or more importantly, to corporate donors.
Heck, most law enforcement refuses to do anything with immigration or diverse criminals
Indian giver.
As my friends Dad used to say “That works, till you steal from an Indian.” He was a Sioux member, and knew it well.
Not all are that way, and honestly many citizens are.
Yep Should have just said Carter and the court.
It has been law for decades, and yet ignored for a couple of decades.
When you go through immigration you have to sign you will not take any assistance, and you can support yourself.
bkmk
It's not yet midnight. Some federal judge could issue an injunction sua sponte claiming that a suit is inevitable and he is preserving the status quo for what is a certainty.
Excellent move. Wish it had happened sooner.
See tagline.
We have to get this story out.
Ad should say these illegals cost $XXXX to you out of your taxes. These illegals get free Section 8 housing and are on Social Security and Medicare today, but they arrived yesterday and never did a day’s work in the USA. You were taxed out of every paycheck of your life and they get the rewards for loafing.Time to end this!
We have to get these ads to become a reality. Let the leftists defend the opposing viewpoint.
I thought it was always like that.
This sounds good, but with this bunch we have now I think they’d rather have the welfare than the green card.
Why not? They aren’t being deported like they should be.
4.2 billion of the 5.2 is a one time thing and was expected. Numbers actually look good.
“that it was OK to take it if you had the bigger need.”
Why communism was so widely accepted in Latin America....
It’s about time.
