Media bias and the gun control debate
The Washington Times ^ | August 1, 2019 | John R. Lott, Jr. and Thomas Massie

Media bias has a huge impact on the gun control debate. The entire debate would be dramatically different if at least three points about mass public shootings ever got coverage: Shootings keep occurring in places where civilians are banned from having guns, almost any modern firearm can be used to inflict mass casualties and armed citizens prevent many attacks from becoming mass public shootings.

Good points.

In Dayton, I heard that there was a police presence in that nightclub district, and that they took down the perpetrator less than a minute after he began his slaughter. Which shows again, that a good guy with a gun takes out a bad guy with a gun. I know liberals don’t accept that reasoning, but, far more would have died in Dayton without that police presence in the nightclub neighborhood.

When a Satan Worshipping, Warren supporting Democrat who just happens to be a white male can be transformed into a “white suprmacist” by mumbling “Presto Chango” and a wave of the Brown Shirt Media’s wand you will never change them. You will never even be acknowledged by them.

It amazes me that people think dems give the flyingest F about gun violence, where what they really want is a populace unable to defend itself from tyranny

In Walmart in the East Bay there are several Walmarts that have 2 armed security guards at the entrances because of the robberies in the area. Walmart usually waits until there is a robbery at the store, then they put in armed security guards. They are really really stupid people.

Doesn’t seem all that stupid. How much money can you lose in a single robbery vs. how much does it cost to pay 6 (three shifts) of armed security guards? Wait until the need presents itself.

At my Walmart I would estimate 25% of the shoppers are armed. But then again that Walmart is in Arkansas.

There is no “Debate”.

Gun Control is the Policy of a Police State.

Our Founders understood the possession of Arms by the Citizenry is a God Given Right.

Want to fix the Gun Laws, make possession of Firearms a Felony for anyone who is NOT a Citizen of the United States and ENFORCE the Law.

Green Card Holders, NO. Visitors, NO. Illegal Invaders, NO.

The left take the easy high road, confiscate guns ban guns. The underlying issues are hard work and its not with their agenda. If this keeps on happening it is for the good of their agenda, control of me and you! Mental health drug addiction, dysfunctional families are root causes but they are not interested Social media is a window of opportunity and a young force of social media bots who can report crazy stuff that law enforcement can follow up on is a start. Stricter gun licensing, stricter gun back ground checks should be included. The left are not on board. Again illegal guns no one can control, legal they can without any heavy lifting

A modest proposal for long-range, “do something”.

Acquaint ALL children of school age with the reality of firearms. Starting in the primary grades, instructions on how to AVOID being accidentally shot by an unsecured handgun they may happen upon. Also, allow the RETURN of fingerbang and toy guns, cap pistols and air rifles to the access of those in the early years of school, so guns do not retain an air of mystery that may be totally fascinating to the young mind. With the acceptance of these devices, it is also necessary to make sure the children have also been fully informed of the responsibilities of safe use and proper care of these devices, and rules of conduct while handling them, even in play. The idea here is to identify at a much earlier age those children who may either be totally afraid of the very idea of hand weapons, or so brazen that they far too quickly adopt the idea of using this kind of device in bullying tactics, which they would quickly reveal. The eternally timid should be given further instruction in means of avoidance, evasion, or how to escape once in a highly vulnerable situation. Also tattoo their Social Security number and name on some part of their anatomy, so the remains may be quickly identified, should they be so unfortunate. For the brazen bullies that WILL cause trouble later in life, counseling and/or psychiatric intervention at this stage may be a way to forecast or forestall future need for intervention, when the situation is much more serious.

For the remainder of the more normally-orientated children in middle school, familiarity with all types of side arms is much encouraged, with even some target practice with light-caliber sidearms, and by the time they are in high school, competitive range firing with specified skill levels as part of the school curriculum.

Guns become totally demystified, being a thing in which youth is in full contact with, and all the rules of care, feeding, grooming and proper use and storage have been instilled in the responsible youth, while identifying at a much earlier age those of whom should NEVER come into contact with weaponry of any kind.

Like I said, long-term, to first overcome the prejudices, and to make sure the NEXT generation is adequately prepared to be available for military training and careers in law enforcement, as well as common home defense. And to weed out the bad actors long before they may develop into a threat.

Of course, there would be some who would want to blow this proposal up into something sinister immediately, and I can only say, superstition is a dreadful taskmaster.

People coming here illegally will absolutely love us disarming ourselves. Cartels with their firepower and stashes of all kinds of weapons by moslems will make us ripe for the picking.

A lot of it comes down to ideas expressed in an article shared here some years back that discussed journalism, and specifically, broadcast journalism. The money in the business of particularly broadcast journalism is “entertainment not truth”. Therefore, it is a lot easier for broadcast journalists to package their alphabet network stories as entertainment featuring the carnage and people shouting at the NRA and other law abiding gun owners’ groups and the President.

And that there is very little or no imperative to discuss the findings and observations of ones like Professor Lott and others who with their solid and credible evidence very effectively challenge and contradict the views of firearms prohibitionists.

The left simply wants dead. Dead defines them. The more dead makes them think they are more pure.

Media bias has a huge impact on the gun control debate entire American political discourse.

There are two central pillars of “the MSM.” First, the fact of the journalism cartel. This is exactly what Adam Smith would have predicted: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.” And, under aegis of the wire services, people of the trade of journalism have been meeting, virtually, ever since the 1850s.

Second, the resulting "conspiracy against the public” takes the form of the massive propaganda campaign to the effect that “journalists are objective.” The reality is, of course, that although objectivity is indeed a worthy goal to strive towards, it is not a state of being. It is hard, objectionable work because, in contradistinction to merely claiming to be objective, it requires that you closely examine your own motives. “Ain’t nobody got time to do that.” So the real effect of the “journalists are objective” propaganda is to cause journalists to go along and get along with each other. Anyone does go along must propagandize to the effect that anyone who does not is “not a journalist, not objective.”

Ah yes, there is also the explanation of why what all these people are “going along” with is socialism. IMHO the true definition of “socialism” is cynicism towards society and naiveté towards government. Common Sense tells us that "Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil” - IOW, that society and government are in a very real sense opposites. Cynicism towards society therefore is naiveté towards government.

And journalism is inherently about bad news, thus journalists are looking only for scandal about society. This is hardly a secret to journalists, who will tell anyone that “If it bleeds, it leads." When journalists claim to be objective, knowing that in fact they are negative, they insinuate that “negativity is objectivity.” But it is hard to construct a better definition of cynicism than that conceit.
