Watching the Moon landing 50 years ago from his comfortable Paris home, Yves Beon could barely contain himself at the spectacle unfolding on TV.
Dozens of white-shirted scientists and engineers at the Apollo Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, were on their feet, many waving flags, cheering at a triumph that was enhancing American prestige and unleashing an ocean of apple-pie patriotism.
Yet Beon, a hero of the French Resistance, was spitting venom at the screen that night and, had he been alive to see last weeks documentaries repeating the footage of Neil Armstrongs giant leap for mankind, his reaction would have been incandescent.
Amid the jubilation half a century ago, no one bothered to point out that Americas scientists had been given a huge helping hand. Or that the Moon landing was, in fact, the brainchild of German scientists led by Wernher von Braun, Kurt Debus and Arthur Rudolph. Or that all three were Nazi war criminals, guilty of mass murder.

They are insane.
Those were German scientists, who were knowledgeable about their science and most likely didn’t know about anything else that went on.
Also, would it have been better, if we didn’t hire them, and maybe never made it to the moon, certainly not in that timeframe.
This article is just trying to stir up trouble.
Yet another attempt at diminishing this great accomplishment.
It was the correct decision to make use of their knowledge and brain power. Case closed.
What is the problem
1. This is, of course, just a sour grapes article from England.
2. But yes, VVBrown was a Nazi and oversaw the Penemubde concentration camp. He was an evil man, a murderer, and a war criminal.
3. I fully understand why the Americans did Operstion Paper Clip and used all these Nazis. If they had not, they would have been at a severe disadvantage to the Soviets.
4. Still, after their usefulness had been extinguished, they should have been taken out back and shot in the head. They were worse than Hitler. They were smart, well-educated, had many colleagues and fellow professors that were Jewish. And they killed them.
Piss be on VvB.
There was a lot of shadiness with the medical/chem-bio scientist and a very treasured commodity.
Von Braun was personally responsible for developing the first U.S. nuclear ballistic missile as well as the rockets that put us on the moon. I guess some of you would rather have immigrants like Ilhan Omar than Von Braun.
Thanks to the royals, they helped created the First World War. Thanks to their greed, they gave rise to the creation of the NAZI monsters. Piss o. The U.K. Technoligiacally retarded. Accomplished nothing to improve the world
Wernher von Braun, Kurt Debus and Arthur Rudolph. Or that all three were Nazi war criminals, guilty of mass murder.
Bullshit.
Total bullshit.
It is true, that its pretty easy to armchair quarterback and virtue signal from the relative peace and extreme wealth and comfort that the majority of Westerners have now, the horrific and dangerous times of almost 80 years ago. Moral compromises are made all the time, big and small.
Had we hanged them all we might have made the moon by the 70s or early 80s. We wouldnt have the modern world we have now until decades down the road. We they nazis yes, did they kill probably, with their V weapons and they as stated in an earlier post, deplored the deaths but were thinking about the science. Is it excusable, no, but their contributions to our modern world via the space program cannot be ignored either. Computers, health care innovations have saved millions of lives.
The left is never happy. If one morning the left overthrow the government, institute full blown communism and mass slaughter all opposition they would be bitching by noon. Apollo was a great triump for all mankind and the USA.
Tom Lehrer and Mad Magazine were instrumental in my warp-age at a young age. Brilliant.
Kennedy did not start the program, Eisenhower did and he put his VP in charge of setting up a program that always had the moon as its end goal.
Kennedy decided for political purposes that it would benefit him and the U.S. politically so he set the goal at 10 years which was an iffy goal at best. He made sure that the program was accelerated but Nixon could rightly claim credit for the results of a program he helped set up.
Don’t forget jet airplanes.
Who cares? At least they did something positive. We used their brains to do something extraordinary.
Maybe we made a mistake fighting the Nazis in WW2, turns out the Euroscumm may not have been worth our blood and treasure for 2 wars. Next time we should stay out of their problems.
William Safire wrote a speech for Nixon in the event that Armstrong and Aldrin were stranded on the lunar surface:
“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.
These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
These two men are laying down their lives in mankinds most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.
They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.
In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.
In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Mans search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.”
A small note at the bottom of the speech advises that, prior to making the statement, the president should also call each of the widows-to-be. And that after the president makes the speech and when NASA ends communication with the astronauts, a clergyman should adopt the same procedure as a burial at sea, commending their souls to the deepest of the deep, concluding with the Lords Prayer.
The speech is also dated on July 18, 1969, two days before Armstrong and Aldrin set foot on the moon, which means that both NASA and the Nixon Administration were already prepared for a stranding.
Look for more media to try and smear the celebration and achievement. Worthless comments by worthless media hacks.
“There is no really direct line from Nazi Germany to the modern world.”
Rat lines.
And Operation Paperclip.
We have millions (probably 5-6 million based on the testimonies of some who have escaped) in the U.S. who are mind slaves as a result of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) from birth (or earlier) which was directly imbedded into American military operations as a result of our attempt to benefit from NAZI scientists’ knowledge.
I guess the other 400,000 plus men and women did not help here in America.......
