McCarthy pins ICE raids on Pelosi inaction

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) partially blamed Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for the reported impending deportation raids, saying that the Speaker has not taken enough action to tighten asylum laws.

Speaking at a press conference Thursday, McCarthy said the raids, which The New York Times reported are set to begin this Sunday, are going forward because President Trump has not seen appropriate Congressional action.

Trump delayed the planned raids last month in order to give lawmakers additional time to pass legislation tightening asylum laws, a policy House Democrats strongly oppose. McCarthy argued Thursday that Democrats have not used that time to take any steps toward changing laws.

“Tell me one thing that this majority has done in the amount of time that the Speaker called the president and asked him to delay it? Has there been a hearing? Has there been a bill produced? Have we asked to stay over a weekend and solve this problem?“ McCarthy said.

“I think if the president actually saw the House actually taking action, he probably would delay even further to make sure the problem gets solved,” he added.

“[Pelosi] asked the president to delay it and he said he would,” he continued. “It is the Speaker who is causing this problem.”

The raids, which were initially planned for last month, are expected to take place in 10 major cities nationwide, according to reports. It is estimated that they will affect up to 2,000 immigrants.

McCarthy also backed the expected raids, saying it is an appropriate action to deport those who “either received a deportation order from a judge or failed to appear before a judge.”

“We are a rule of law country and this is following the rule of law,” McCarthy said at the press conference.

McCarthy said while he doesn’t know the exact timing of the raids, it should not come as a surprise to those affected.

stop playing politics and blaming. These people should have been deported in 2017 or before. If the dems pass a bill these people should still be deported.

“Under both US law and international law, anyone who seeks asylum at a port of entry into the United States must be received, allowed to request asylum, and referred to an asylum officer for the of review their claim.”

“Turning these people away from the border would mean that US authorities were breaking the law.”

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/10/fact-vs-fiction-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-caravan-passing-through-mexico-on-its-way-to-the-usa/

No border wall will be effective as long as the invaders can ask any USCIS person at any port of entry for “asylum” and Article 23 welfare benefits and lightning fast Article 34 naturalization to start the chain migration process for their relatives.

The Congress needs to denounce [get out from under] the Refugee Convention.

“Article 44 denunciation
1. Any Contracting State may denounce this Convention at any time by a notification addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
2. Such denunciation shall take effect for the Contracting State concerned one year from the date upon which it is received by the Secretary-General of the United Nations....”

US asylum law must also get fixed, effective as of the end of that one year period.

It would be futile for the Democrats of the House to back and pass a bill attempting to prevent the deportation of these families and/or individuals already subject to provisions of the existing law.

I am addressing the justification stated for the raise. Democrat recalcitrance. THE reason is they have already been determined to be deportable and should be deported regardless of politics, or whom the nF does what.

Announcing the raids is as bad and dangerous as the Mayor of Oakland doing so last year.

Get going with the roundups, I do like that the Republican is focusing blame on Dem inaction where it should be, Paul Ryan would be in the closet shivering and crying.

There's some treaty on asylum that says that, but a lot of third world countries didn't sign on, so they let people through. Mexico was not a part of the treaty, but I believe they's started supporting Trump and are blocking people, now.

What exactly was Congress supposed to do about people who have already been ordered deported by the court?

Amnesty is the only thing they could do.

Yep, legally Congress can’t do siccum to stop the court ordered deportations other than outright amnesty and they know that’d go nowhere.

I'm really confused.. How did we go from a full million ready to be given the boot, down to only maybe 2M?
