I gave up baseball because of the strike, never went back.

I gave up football because of the kneeling, Kaepernick was just the final straw.

I gave up the Olympics because of medalists disrespecting our country and flag in front of the world.

I even gave up NASCAR because it took up too much of my time.

I NEVER watched basketball, tennis, or golf (just shoot me)

The dirty little secret here is that most Americans simply don't much of a sh!t about soccer ... and they give absolutely NO sh!t about women's soccer. Even if they take the time to watch a Women's World Cup final, they know in their hearts that it's really no different than watching a Special Olympics event.

Now THIS was a truly magnificent event:

February 22, 2020 will be the 40th anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice" -- an event which is almost universally remembered as the greatest moment in U.S. sports history.

And yet hockey wasn't even close to a popular sport at the time.

The game between Team USA and the Soviet Union wasn't even shown live on TV.

Maybe 10,000-12,000 people saw it live at the arena.

And yet its epic place in our history has only grown over time. No tiresome politics, mostly nameless players, and no exhausting media coverage of stunted misfits like you're seeing today with the women's soccer team.

There are about 320 million people in the U.S. today. The reports I've seen indicate that 14 million of them watched the Women's World Cup final. There were fewer than 230 million people living in the U.S. in 1980. 27 million watched the medal round game between the U.S. and USSR.

Soccer is popular around the world because it is much easier to play than baseball, basketball, football etc. so a lot of people remember playing it as children.

It’s incredibly boring - IIRC on average a score only happens every 41 or 46 minutes!

All this attention is media driven not because the American people are in love with this team. The team is already on the downside of their 15 minutes - they just don’t know it.

LOL. You are describing baseball. Players standing around for hours with a few minutes of actual playing time mixed in. Then there is the fact that American football is another 3-4 hour sport that has like 15 minutes of actual game time.

Soccer, OTOH, is non stop for two 45 minute periods. You know almost exactly how long the game will be. There is just as much nuance in soccer as other sports. I suppose if you don’t understand it then the sport is “boring.”
