They had contact with Bush immediately and all the way.

Bush actually watched Haig on Tv as he assumed his pretend position. I remember seeing Haig...a total wreck.

I'm not saying Bush was really missing, I'm saying the SAID Bush was missing, presumably because you don't say "oh he's on a secret mission now". So they said to the press that he couldnt be located.

Put yourself in front of a TV watching coverage of the media in front of a hospital saying "we do not know if the wonds are mortal" and then they cut to reporters in front of the Naval Observator saying "the Vice President is not in the White House or here at his residence. The adminstration is trying to locate him...". Your imagination starts going. Did they take him too? What's happening? Are we under attack? Is anyone in charge if we are?

Someone had to reassure the nation that we weren't adrift. Haig saw that, he might even have been told by Bush to say what he said. But that's why he said it.
