Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday tweeted a warning to US President Donald Trump.
"Misconceptions endanger peace," he warned. "Sanctions aren't alternative to war; they ARE war. 'Obliteration'=genocide=war crime. 'Short war' with Iran is an illusion."
Last week, Trump sent Iran an ultimatum, setting a deadline for the start of negotiations and warning that if Iran refuses to talk, the US will attack for the downing of an American surveillance drone.
On Monday, Trump announced additional sanctions against Iran, which he said were retaliation for the downed drone, and on Tuesday he warned that "any attack on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force."

My understanding is that economic sanctions, like a Naval blockade, is an act of war.
Hey, clueless yet arrogant Iranian FM, it was Iran that started this ‘war’, way back when you took Americans as hostages and held them for 444 days. Don’t threaten us. You will not survive American military action.
I believe it is a legitimate casus belli for initiating war.
So are truck bombs driven into Marine barracks, kidnapping our diplomats, and EFPs used against our troops. Iran has been at war with us for quite a long time. We shouldn’t rush to start shooting at them at the first opportunity, but we shouldn’t be ignorant of the facts either.
I would argue they have been engaged in war with us at least since they started training and supporting the insurgents to attack, maim and kill thousands of US troops in Iraq. It was not their conflict, not their country, not their war but they engaged us with treacherous and deadly tactics.

However, as hard as we are squeezing them, it ought to be. The only thing stopping them from shooting a manned US asset is their fear of annihilation.
But eventually they will. They’re in a corner with no way out.

Depends on who is judging and the mechanism, doesn’t it? If we have an alliance and a UN resolution, it seems to be we have an agreement about who is in the right and who is the belligerent being sanctioned. refusing to buy or sell goods is a legal recourse . If we don’t have that buy in, then a blockade would be an act of war.

The Japanese claimed the same thing on 07 December 1941.
That did not work out well for the Japanese.
