Walmart adds AI-powered cameras to more than 1,000 stores to reduce checkout theft, report says

Walmart Opens a New Window. is working to reduce checkout theft in more than 1,000 U.S. stores with the help of cameras powered by artificial intelligence Opens a New Window. .

The retailer began investing in the surveillance program, dubbed Missed Scan Detection, several years ago in an effort to combat shrinkage — loss due to several causes including theft, scanning errors, waste and fraud, a Walmart spokeswoman told Business Insider Opens a New Window. .

"Walmart is making a true investment to ensure the safety of our customers and associates," Walmart spokeswoman LeMia Jenkins told the business site. "Over the last three years, the company has invested over half a billion dollars in an effort to prevent, reduce and deter crime in our stores and parking lots.”

“We are continuously investing in people, programs and technology to keep our stores and communities safe,” she added.

The AI-powered cameras were rolled out to more than 1,000 stores about two years ago and the retail giant has seen positive results since then, according to Jenkins, who said shrinkage has reduced in stores where the cameras have been added.

Whenever I pay with a $50 or ($100 bill) I always say, “Is it okay if I give you a 50?” or “I only have a fifty—is that okay?” so they know what I gave them in an innocent, not so obvious way that I’m keeping you honest.

I sometimes do it with a $20 especially if it’s in a drive-thru.

I once was shortchanged at a Rite Aid. When I told the clerk she owed me $5 the manager had to come over and audit her register. I was happy it showed her exactly $5 over.

That is a great idea, I usually let them know big bills but for some reason didn’t that day.

My local Wal-Mart is an area that is basically crime free had 500K in shrinkage one year.

Mine is in a crime free area too so those figures are staggering.

It's their workers taking merchandise out the back door and through the front door with the aid of the "receipt checker"

I don’t know if this is the system but one I’ve heard is coming (deployed in a few) has the receipt number tied to the video capture.

This is saved so that WM can tie the receipt to actual video of the checkout and bagging. They’ll be able to see if the items were bagged for the customer, as I understand it (I heard info on the sale of the system).

Regardless, just another component in our surveillance society. As I’ve told the story before, I saw a Latino gal, maybe 21-28 bagging her stuff at the self-check lane not too far from me. Maybe 15-20 feet away (I was in self-check-out too, which is rare for me).

Two off-duty city cops, in uniform mind you were working security. They were also standing only a few feet from her. Both of them.

The cameras were being monitored. She didn’t get 4-6 feet away from the register before they grabbed her and put the cuffs on her. I watched it all go down right in front of me.

Apparently she had not scanned each of her items before putting them in the bag(s).

The cops must have had ear-pieces of some sort because they grabbed her really fast and knew exactly which one they were going for.

[They’re checking up on the cashiers, not you.]

Probably so. I’ve had it done to me, several times at some Wal-Marts. Yes, even in so-called nice areas.

It’s no big deal to me. Only takes a few seconds.

Although I’m against guilty-until-proven-innocent, I don’t mind a store having reasonable safeguards in place.

I’d be more insulted if I was forced to pay with thumb-print or fingerprint. Rest assured, that’s coming too. Already implemented at some places.

I can tell them how to help with loss. Go backs! Especially the kind that have to be refrigerated.

Walmart is a mess!

[ The self-checkout kiosks are kinda scary. ]

I'm always afraid I'll screw up and not successfully scan an item and they'll grab me like the Latino gal, LOL. I always go to a human checker, if I can. Unless I have just one or two items.

All part of our surveillance society. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

[Some day everything will have RF chips. You just load up the basket, run it through the reader and everything is instantly checked out at the same time.]

Some already have the RFID chips. Certain stores. On one job, I used to program the bar codes for the labels. Later versions of those printers spit out the RFID tag on the back side of the label, coded with the info (one of my internal customers had that version of the printer). I also coded the SQL for the bar code scanners for a significant gift-item manufacturer (their point of sale management software).

So this IBM system is well on its way. This is just an example video. I saw this commercial in 2007. About fell off the couch though I shouldn’t have. Read about the systems in a single point-of-sale magazine I just happened to pick up. Perhaps I didn’t just pick it up by accident; only God knows.

Once these systems are implemented world-wide, it will be very easy to turn off one’s account when one doesn’t have the Mark of the Beast. (which will happen, IMHO)

Maybe the boxes should drive. The boxes knew we were lost.

Oh yeah, man. I was awesome!

I did Twist and Shout!

(Try not to notice that I sound exactly like the Beatles with some additional horns, voices and applause)

That had to be one of the dumbest movies ever made.

Despite that, it was good.

Soon our house address will be a barcode. Robots will bring our food to our doorstep in chilled boxes. Think of the “shrinkage” right from our doorsteps. No facial recognition surveillance will do the trick if the thieves disguise themselves with face altering prosthetic makeup.

if I spent $7.00 and give him/her a $20 bill I always say, “Out of twenty,” so they look and see it’s NOT a ten.

I do too - people make mistakes and I don't have time to watch them count their drawer. I especially do it if I go thru a fast food place. I usually use debit card at Walmart.

Apparently ‘Twist and Shout’ was the 1986 movie song.

It was in ‘Back to School’ as well.

Same year I decided, to go, back to school (to save money hit the local community college before getting my Bachelor’s).

My favorite scene from FBDO:

When they wrecked the Ferrari at the end it almost made me sick. Fortunately someone here on FR told me that it was not a real Ferrari.

All of the GPS coordinates are probably already attached to homeowners.

I'm sure the census takers ask for cell phone numbers for similar reasons (as well). Jack Chick foresaw a time when house addresses would be painted on the roof of a house. GPS has made that unnecessary. I could see bar-code addresses on roofs, though.

Even a replica is a waste.

Don’t get me started about the Dodge Chargers in “Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry” and “the Dukes of Hazzard”.

Nor the Challengers in “Vanishing Point” (5 used to trade parts as I recall). It’s obviously a ‘67-’68 Camaro destroyed at the end but that’s a shame too (could be a Firebird).

The good clerks will lay a $10, $20, $50, etc. across the drawer so they know what the customer just handed them in a hurry.

I think I saw a guy rip off a clerk in front of me, though. Very busy place. I could not see the bill - the guy claimed he gave two $20’s which makes no sense since the total was less than $20. I couldn’t see it because there was a stack of merchandise between me and the cashier.

When the customer started getting irate, I suggested a look at the video from the camera over the register. The guy I knew just wrote him a credit for $25 to end it. I wanted to see what the video said.

I seriously doubt he rec’d $40 but the video would probably have shown the truth. As it was, I believe the customer made a profit on that one.

I’ll just leave it up to the readers to guess on the demographics.

That being said, I ran into a group of three idiots last year, just about as stupid. Dey wuz honky, like me.
