A massive fire has erupted at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in Southwest Philadelphia shaking nearby homes and sending thick smoke into the air. Homes as far away as South Jersey were rocked by a series of explosions as the blaze, which erupted shortly after 4 a.m., burned. Some residents in Philadelphia said the explosions knocked art off their walls. The fire is contained on the property off Passyunk Avenue of the refinery, fire officials said shortly before 6 a.m. Authorities have not yet said if any workers were injured or not.

Local news is saying it’s butane. It’s contained at 3 alarms but not under control.
Pipelines are fine. Refineries should not be in very populated areas.
Wow.
Have a relative in Abington.
No, it wasn’t Frank Rizzo.
It was Wilson Goode, the first black democrat mayor of Philly that burned down a predominantly black neighborhood.
Here he is taking “full responsibility” for it.

Look for the gougers to use this as an excuse to jack the price of gas right at the start of summer driving season.
Frank Rizzo.
One hell of a blast...
I remember when the Marcus Hook explosion happened, too.
Bad, bad stuff.
Just saw the one worker say they have it contained to one tank-Hopefully -local news has great coverage.
“Plot to raise gas prices and crash Trump’s approval rating conspiracy theories” coming in 3....2....1...
Drove my BLEVE to the levee,
blew the levee sky high...
You know, sort of like Bush crated the ObaMao recession and OaMao created the Trump boom.
Rizzo had been out of office for several years at that point; prior to Wilson Goode, there was Mayor Bill Green 1980-1984, who was the mayor immediately after Rizzo.
Greene declined to run for re-election, and Wilson Goode replaced Bill Greene.
As for blaming Rizzo... I’ll just say this: when Rizzo was mayor, I never had to escort my grandmother to the supermarket with a baseball bat. He was a good guy and he loved his city and his people.
Philly a sanctuary city?
Yup.
We should stop helping the dirt world and get refineries/, nuclear power plants etc. all up and going.
It’s infrastructure/security related.
Been by that place a hundred times, viewing it from I-95. Always seemed odd that a refinery would be so close to Center City.
“...so close to Center City...”
Only 5 miles from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia - luckily they are north and slightly west so upwind.
eep!
The timing of this event does seem odd
