DUBAITwo tankers were damaged in attacks off the coast of Iran early Thursday, including one operated by a Japanese company, on a day when Tehran rebuffed attempts by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to ease a military standoff with the U.S.
The incidents sent oil prices sharply higher, reigniting fears of trade disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which over a third of the worlds seaborne crude oil is shipped. Brent crude, the international benchmark for crude prices, rose 4% on Thursday to $62.37.
The attacks appeared to use relatively sophisticated weapons, according to early assessments, and came within roughly 45 minutes of each other in the Gulf of Oman, where four tankers were attacked last month in an incident the U.S. blamed on Iran, which Tehran denied. The U.S. military has built up its military presence in the Persian Gulf in response to what American officials said were threats from Iran, sending an aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and its strike group to the region.

“Quite possibly its the regime in Iran that would find a war with the USA “
That’s pretty flimsy speculation. You can make a stronger case that it’s the Saudis.
“No more of our sons and daughters giving their blood for your “order out of chaos” shenanigans.”
Can we get an amen?
If we got dragged into a war Trump would make the House of Saud cough up people and cash - and not just for thugs in DC, thugs in the Military, military contractors, and politicians to 'give million dollar speeches' etc - the usual 'legal graft' Washington is known for.. ... Trump would make them pay the AMERICAN PEOPLE back. Trump's NOT corrupt and he's not a fool.
The Saud's won't be that gung ho for OUR deaths if theirs are on the table too.
drivel....... balderdascious drivel
U.S. defense official told Fox News that it saw an unexploded mine attached to the hull of the Panama-listed, Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous ship, one of the two ships attacked. It is the same type of mine used to damage four oil tankers last month in the same area
You havent been listening to the Saudis. They have publicly urged US to fight Iran. The logical next step is to stage an incident that will push us into doing so
Remember the Maine
Remember Gulf of Tonkin
Remember Saddams WMDs
Looks like we could be fooled into war again. This is why I discourage all members of my family from joining the military, with the possible exception of the Coast Guard. Our wars these days are in the service of special interests and foreign countries, not the defense of America.
If a family member wants to serve in uniform, I recommend the Border Patrol. Theyre defending Americas sovereignty, not Saudi Arabias
“Somebody really, really wants Trump to attack Iran”
It would be fun if Donald Trump went to the G20 Summit and challenged Xi to let his shiny new Navy take care of Iran’s piracy. The US 5th Fleet could sit back and watch China flub their first major fleet action. Maybe get the a couple of those fancy new destroyers banged up by getting shot with their own Silkworm missiles?
I smell Gulf of Tonkin
Riiiight. And how much are we getting from Iraqi oil sales ?
The Saudis are an integral part of keeping the dollar as the world reserve currency. Screw with them about much of anything other than taking orders for weapons and they'll start taking payment in gold which would collapse the dollar in a heartbeat.
Until the US pays off the $22 trillion in debt we've run up no one will pressure the Saudis about anything. Our whole government worked overtime to cover their asses after 9/11 when we didn't even have half as much debt.
Put the pipe down, pal, you're definitely one toke over the line.
If Iran is doing this, to send a message, why do it surreptitiously, through unknown proxies, instead of an Iranian-flag destroyer?
This was staged by someone who wants us to be able to blame Iran. Id say Saudis
Somebody wants to damage these oil tankers without sinking them or creating a major oil spill. They’re using a charge above the waterline? Something else is afoot. I notice that both tanker crews were ‘rescued’ by the Iranians. Could this be an elaborate hostage-taking exercise?
Maybe, assuming Saudi does not get hit in the war. Biggest fear during first Gulf War was saboteurs hitting oil fields. War holds a big risk with possibility of dismissed returns. Embargo provides a steady income. Also Iranians are very good at mining the Gulf they could delay for an extended period the movement of oil through the Gulf
You're right on that... we've been 'sold out' for years - mostly by our own 'deep state' and others on the 'legal' take.
Only Rutgers and other conspiracy theorists deny that
Darn spellcheck: shouldve read, only truthers and conspiracy theorists deny that
Rutgers is not involved and certainly doesnt deny how 911 happened!
“I thought oil tankers had to be double hulled, reinforced, non-distructive tested annually etc to keep their insurance... Maybe oil tankers are harder to take down.”
When the Iranians last got frisky and put mines in the Persian Gulf the US Naval escort commander put the tankers single file and let the lead tanker “soak up” all the mine hits. He realized that an oil tanker is a very difficult thing to sink and he wasn’t going to risk US cruisers, destroyers & frigates when the probably couldn’t survive a single mine explosion. This was all after Ronald Reagan undertook to “re-Flag” all the tankers that wanted US naval protection.
Can you say USS Liberty?
The anniversary was a few days ago.
“That is true and the winning of said wars was not the objective. Then, what was the objective?”
The simple answer is the maintenance of American Global Hegemony. Before the US, the British did the same thing. And they didn’t win very many of their “small wars” either.
Well, it's possible. It was the 'out part of the Saud family' that did 9/11... and even then the Sauds protected their family's reputation with Bush's help.
I have to admit I'm tired of our Deep State controlled Presidents fighting wars for Arabs... any of 'em. They should fight their own wars - maybe then they'd be more careful about getting into them.
