Record low unemployment for workers without bachelor’s degrees in May
Washington Examiner ^ | June 07, 2019 | Joseph Lawler

Unemployment for workers without bachelor’s degrees fell to the lowest rate on record in May, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday.

The extremely low joblessness for less-educated workers is a sign that the decadelong expansion is benefiting economically vulnerable people and is reaching workers at at the margins of the labor force.

The unemployment rate for workers over the age of 25 without four-year degrees fell to 3.4%, the lowest in records extending back to 1992, just barely beating out the marks set in the dot-com boom. The unemployment figures are adjusted for seasonal variation.

Every single contractor I talk to here in the Idaho Panhandle cannot get workers. They all say they sell a lot more services if there were more good workers available. Everyone tells the same tale — kids don’t want to work hard, they show up late, they want to use their cell phones all the time, they quit inside a week because the work is unexpectedly hard, or they use drugs and are dishonest. One contractor insists that he have dinner with a candidate either at his hour or the candidate’s house to get to know him before hiring him.

Fewer illegals means Americans can get the working class jobs.

I don’t have a Bachelor’s but I do have two years. I am 73 and working seventy hours a week for a boss who is constantly bitching about having to pay overtime but I keep getting paid just the same and any hint that I may be quitting or wanting to work fewer hours elicits things like bringing me coffee at the site. I am a security guard at a city marina and they can’t get anyone else to do it. Fewer people now will do this work because the hourly is less than they can get elsewhere. I hope they do not raise my hourly, though, because then I will be cut to 40 hours and make a lot less money per week. I am costing the company on net but they can’t drop the contract because they have other city contracts. It is a multi-year contract so I am locked in for a long time. Ain’t this Trump economy great?

The best cure is for parents to charge rent at 17 or so until they are on a viable path if not...eviction usually gets them moving.

I would charge rent but put the money away to be returned to them when they get on their feet. Double the motivation.

In my case, joining the military was running away from
home, without, you know, actually ‘running away from home.’

Lots of small business owners got use to hiring cheap third world desperate 'workers/slaves... They'll get over it when we start fining them $10,000 for every illegal they own... oops, I mean hired.

That's what happens when jobs are plentiful - wages go up... and if businesses won't pay the higher wages they lose their workers. Capitalism works FOR workers... another reason socialist countries devolve into third world hellholes after enough time goes by.

Like every other small business owner out here in BFE-the contractor I work for/with insists that I only hire locals for any job, whether it is a subcontractor or a helper/laborer who has no experience at all-applicants from the city are not willing to work hard, refuse to learn a task if they don’t like it and want to be texting or talking while they are on a ladder or under a sink, which I don’t tolerate for safety and practical reasons-and you’d be shocked to learn how many of those young men give you a blank look when you tell them to measure and cut a length of 2x4-some of them don’t even know what a 2x4 looks like, much less how to measure, mark and cut...

Our local country millenials have those basic construction skills, don’t mind working hard and don’t have a problem obeying the rules-they have been brought up by good parents-the best workers are homeschooled kids, too-plenty of them around here. If we had to rely on hires from the city, we’d have to raise our prices too much just to make up for the increased hours to complete the job-either that or do everything ourselves, which is impossible..

We also do hire green card holders sometimes when there is a rush job and not enough people-but llegals/mojados are never hired-I have la migra on speed dial...

The illegals never got this far north. They mostly stopped in the ag regions in Southern Idaho (the potato belt).

They work in meat packing as far north as Minnesota... and in Florida they don’t limit themselves to farm work. Guess what they ruin is different all over the country.

Good for you.

Not everyone has the necessary conditions at home or they are just plain defiant and have to live like a street urchin before they find direction, as was the case with my daughter.
My son a totally different outcome.
