WASHINGTON The worlds largest automakers warned President Trump on Thursday that one of his most sweeping deregulatory efforts his plan to weaken tailpipe pollution standards threatens to cut their profits and produce untenable instability in a crucial manufacturing sector.
In a letter signed by 17 companies including Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Volvo, the automakers asked Mr. Trump to go back to the negotiating table on the planned rollback of one of President Barack Obamas signature policies to fight climate change.
The carmakers are addressing a crisis that is partly of their own making. They had sought some changes to the pollution standards early in the Trump presidency, but have since grown alarmed at the expanding scope of the administrations plan.

A computer that cost a million dollars a few decades ago costs less than a thousand dollars with thousands of times more utility and power. A car that cost a thousand dollars a few decades ago now costs a 1000 - 5000% more today with less than 20% more utility.
The issue us Calif has different standards
And it will be expensive to produce cars for calig and cars for the rest of the country.
It says in the article they sent a letter to Newsome asking him to lower mileage requirements but he said No
Ford signed the letter but did not comment on it.
GM folded to CA and issued a statement saying that they wanted one national standard.
All the others who signed are either Asian or Euroweenie crony capitalists who are trying to influence our countries policies.
Ive told the companies that siding with California is the only thing thats going to protect them from uncertainty.
Let them negotiate with California. Apparently they are taking advice from a former Obama administration official to side with California.
If California won't negotiate file a lawsuit. I'm sure a few 6 figure corporate lawyers can find a lawsuit.
These manufactures should stop taking advice from former Obama administration officials.

And I can break it out when I want to.

Excellent point. Several other states in the NE have set their own emission refs that (I think) are even tougher than CA.
There is nothing stopping these 17 auto makers from voluntarily complying with the stricter standards. If a divided system is a problem, problem solved.
I know, I’m shocked too. :) Carbon credits, anyone? Stunning how wealthy we’ve made the Deep State.
If we didn’t know any better, we might even start to think there’s been some colluding going on here between big government and big business.

My friends cousins neighbor had a carburetor that would get 100 mpg. He made it from a coffee can. Honest!

the public mainly- if they can get a car cheaper, then most are going to do that- and them ore expensive vehicles that exceed regulations, will suffer in sales
Sure- they will sell to some self loathing guilt ridden folks who think they are saving the planet- but by and large- that more expensive, less featured vehicle line will die out
Vehicles are now costing as much as my family paid for a house back when- trucks are ridiculously priced now- and a lot of the reason is because of carbon regulating parts needed to make the vehicles compliant with air quality standards-
A couple days ago I read some business is suggesting that commuters in San Francisco use pogo sticks to commute. They should try that .
My new(er) 2016 Honda Accord Sport is suppose to get:
“Up to 26 city / 35 highway”
While driving I have a display that shows real time and a history of my trips for mpg.
I am getting 18mpg. It sometimes shows 25mpg. Have not seen 35mpg yet. Maybe if I coast downhill.....
I drive the freeway in the morning at 60 to 80mph and the side roads that have 45mph signs on the way back. Usually less then 35mph.
Total mileage is a little less then 40 miles a day.
I have had the car 9 days. No long road trips yet.

Regulation has doubled on up, the price of a vehicle. It does nothing but harm. Automakers demanded the mark up.
Instead one regulation is needed that all manufacturers must offer one vehicle model containing no more than one single computer.
Problem solved.
