My first experience with "coed sports" was playing dodgeball in elementary school, and it was quite a (I HATE this smarmy phrase) teachable moment. I quickly realized those smaller more seemingly "fragile" girls were the hardest to eliminate from the game precisely because they had quicker reflexes and more fleet footed than us stronger, "tougher" boys were.

I preferred playing tetherball. Do they play that anymore?

I will never understand all the hate that dodgeball gets. I loved dodgeball when I was a kid specifically because I was not particularly athletic and didn’t enjoy sports that much. It was easy. Simple rules and not much skill required LOL! Just throw the ball, dodge the ball. Repeat. Literally, the best way to spend a gym class.

People who want to ban dodgeball can suck it!

Simple. Do a fake through, and make them commit to jumping a certain direction, then nail 'em!

When I was in elementary school, the girls played jump rope and jacks while the boys played tag and dodge ball. Everyone seemed satisfied with that setup.

Dodgeball has been under attack since the 1980s. I’m honestly surprised there’s school districts that still permit it.

Remember, dodgeball is a sport of violence, exclusion and degradation. So, when you're picking players in gym class, remember to pick the bigger, stronger kids for your team. That way you can gang up on the weaker ones.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The thought police are out and about making sure nobody has any fun any more.

We can't have any of that enjoying life stuff. People might not want to be controlled if they can't be convinced to fear all the time and depend on others to protect them from the monsters under the bed.

We had a sadistic gym teacher in 9th grade and we didn't use those lightweight red rubber balls. He had us play with what they called “bombardment balls.” Not sure if that's a real name but they were the size of a volleyball with a glossy finish and weighed as much as a basketball, and they were hard. They could do some real damage.
Then, to discourage the wallflowers cowering in the back, he would every so often blow the whistle and both teams had to switch sides. You couldn't throw the ball until you were across the front line of the other side, but aggressive players could rush across and trap the people hiding at the back, then letting the ball fly at point blank range. No mercy in that game.

Same here man. Dodgeball teaches you a simple lesson for life: when there’s trouble approaching, avoid it. When you get hit, shrug it off and get back out there.

Was it really anybody’s favorite? It was something gym teachers like to assign, but did kids actually play it on their own? Willingly, I mean, not like some kid starts throwing balls at the other kids all on his own.

We played a variation of that but called it “battleball”.

Started in 2nd or 3rd grade to toughen us up.

Is there anything that isn’t going to eventually be deemed racist, oppressive, homophobic, islamophobic, sexist, or some other derogatory characterization? Or are we just supposed to live our lives in a continual state of embarrassment and shame over all these imagined slights we’ve apparently been guilty of our entire lives. Gosh it’s tough to be “woke.” I think instead I’ll just live and let live, and enjoy my life...

That only works on the inexperienced.
The small fast players with good reflexes will still be able to dodge AFTER the ball leaves the hand once they develop the discipline to wait.

The schools I grew up in played dodge ball about once a week through eighth grade when a wider range of activities entered the picture.

Games didn't end until the agile players began running up to the centerline and back as a challenge.

My kids loved dodgeball. In fact, they always said it was their favorite game in gym class.

Of course, as an adult, I can see that the game might be used by some kids to pick on others.

But calling it a “tool of oppression” is ridiculous.
