Trump lifts year-round ethanol restrictions, could lower gas prices

The Trump administration on Friday announced that it would allow for the year-round sale of gasoline with higher concentrations of ethanol.

The action addresses a rule the Environmental Protection Agency had in place preventing the sale of so-called E15 fuel, which contains 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline, between June 1 and Sept. 15. The purpose was to prevent air pollution and curb dependence on foreign petroleum, but the ban has stopped some retailers from selling E15 at all because of the need to change out pumps.

The EPA says cars newer than 2001 or okay to run E15. Car makers say 2007 and newer should be okay. You will have to pump at least 4 gallons of non E15 gas to dillute leftover fuel in the hose to be sure your older car is okay. E15 is highly corrosive to rubber in cars made before 2007. Do not use in motorcycles, lawnmowers, or any small engines.

Terrible.

Shouldn’t be using ethanol in gasoline at all.

Four Things to Know About E15

I'm very much against any ethanol in gasoline. It cost more to make and it causes a decrease in gas mileage per gallon which defeats any supposed benefits to the air pollution. The only people who benefit from this garbage gas is the farmers and I believe there are better ways to help them.

I agree. This ethanol farce should be rolled back and deleted.

How about year round no-ethanol gas?

No boat owner wants anything to do with it, and travels to find sources of zero ethanol.

AGREED!!!!

Ethanol killed my perfectly good Town Car a few years ago. None of our vehicles are new enough for that garbage.

I don’t want to use ethanol at all much less a higher concentration.

There are lots of places in Tulsa that sell real gas. I never use ethanol unless I’m on a road trip and can’t find real gas. Feed corn to the pigs. Not your car

Here, the ethanol-free gas is about ten percent more expensive.
I always get it though.

Not at the cost in expensive fuel system repairs or blown engines, we don’t.

It’s a wash then. Ethanol free gas will give you better mpg’s so it balances out.

What good is cheaper gas if it causes us to burn more of it to go the same distance? (rhetorical question)

Great point. In Arizona; most the places left that sell non ethanol gas are near lakes or rivers for the boats to fill up at. There may be a few hold outs here and there but mostly they are near a lake. I wonder if the CA coast has non ethanol stations for their boats. If so; I bet they are crazy expensive but then isn't everything in CA.

We have it a few station here in Kailua Kona, and at the harbor, of course.

Price is not far out of line. Good as many of us stock up for generators during hurricane season.

More like 50% more in my area. But enthanol free does not work well in modern high compression engines. And MtBE is really a nasty substitute.

For some reason my bike runs well on ever clear or alochol paint thinner or wlamaet isopropyl in 95% concentration, heck, even 70% runs fine in dry hot arizona weather. But that E85 is absolute garbage. They had to put something else in it that makes it break down like that.

It is supposedly good for new model cars with boosted smaller engine (eg ecoboost), but I find that stuff to be garbage for my bike. For some reason walmart isopropyl or anhydrous alcohol paint thinner works very well and smells much better. That E85 is cancer are us.
