Rare earth elements are used every day. They are metals that are used in everything from cell phones to cars, televisions, military jet engines and medical devices.

However, the tit-for-tat trade Opens a New Window. war between the U.S. and China, Opens a New Window. may present a challenge to the industry which heavily relies on China. The retaliatory tariffs from China on $60 billion worth U.S. goods goes into effect this weekend.

Blue Line Corp., a chemical company based in Texas, is the first and only company outside of China that can process small batches of rare earth. They just partnered with Australian rare earths mining company Lynas to build a processing facility in the U.S.

You would be surprised. Large ship shipping in bulk is dirt cheap. Dirt cheap as in under $10 a ton. Costs as much to load/unload the vessel as the shipping cost. Rail from California to TX would come out at more or less a wash.

Good news, but an example of bad journalism. Rare earth processing plants in Colorado and California were run out of business by China and Clinton’s insane EPA in the 90’s.

Yes. Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California is operating now. MP Materials resumed mining and refining operations in January 2018.

“Seems like a strange place to put it considering most of the Rare Earths are in CO, UT and NV.
Transportation cost would doom it”

Well, the article says they have partnered with an Australian mining company so I bet the raw materials will come to Texas by ship. In large quantities that might be cheap.

rare earth processing facilities are enormously dirty and polluting. In order to comply with existing EPA regulations, the cost to process the ore and materials will be much, much more expensive than what is coming out of China.

What does that mean?

[1] That the USA will be able to process rare earth materials . Yay!

[2] That they will be many, many, many times more expensive than their Chinese competition. Boo!

[3] Components and products utilizing American processed rare earth components will be much more expensive than the Chinese versions. Perhaps by a factor of 10x to 20x . Yuck!

It wouldn’t surprise me too much considering the arrangement we have for China and our USPS.

There are probably folks who think I’m too.

Of course when I see a bunch of houses reduced to ash while the lawns and nearby woods are largely untouched I think “Smart Meters” rather than “death rays”. And every smart meter is there because the government got bought off at some point.

Probably the ghost of Mohammad, according to early Muslims he was so white (Matchgame: How white was he?) ... he was so white he could use mayonnaise for eyeshadow.

Why we ever gave China the edge on these rare earth metals, I’ll never know.

Some in congress and some in the environmental movement will do ANYTHING to harm America.

I wonder if DiFi's hubby made anything on the deal.

They are doing heavy rare earths.

Look up Texas Rare Earth Resources Corp.

They are in Texas just off I-10 about 80 miles down the road from El Paso.

I grew up in Hondo and still keep up with what’s going on there by checking out the local newspaper’s website. Here’s an article from this week’s edition:
