It is cheaper to pay off the family of a dead employee than it is to pay out a lawsuit brought by the family of robber who was killed or maimed. An employee killed in a store robbery is covered by workers compensation insurance coverage which has a statutory death payment limit, and the employer is not even involved in a suit.
