That's what killed both the power and oil industries in Venezuela. State ownership of the means of production means party ownership, which means plunder by politically connected incompetents. They can't build, they can only steal. That's socialism in a nutshell.

We've visited South Africa several times...all but the most recent was before Mandella. During our visit of a couple of years ago there was no problems while we were in Johannesburg but there was a problem when we were up near Kruger National Park. We figured that given the Kruger was in the middle of the African bush stuff like that was to be expected...mainly because we encountered the same thing in Kenya.

However,South Africa is supposed to be more advanced than Kenya so...

Those of us old enough to remember South Africa pre-Carter, can recall Johannesburg as being a first world city comparable with London. Well.. almost.
