Group’s longtime leader says Oliver North, president of the NRA, wants him out

Longtime National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre has told the group’s board he is being extorted and pressured to resign by the organization’s president, Oliver North, over allegations of financial improprieties, in an extraordinary battle roiling one of the nation’s most powerful nonprofit political groups.

In a letter sent to NRA board members late Thursday afternoon, LaPierre, the group’s CEO and executive vice president, said he refused the demand. Instead he called on board members to “see this for what it is: a threat meant to intimidate and divide us.”

North sent his own letter to the board late Thursday evening, in which he said his actions were for the good of the NRA and that he was forming a crisis committee to examine financial matters inside the organization, according to people familiar with its contents.

“I definitely trust Oliver North on this.”

No doubt. If North sees a problem — there is a problem.

They should have sorted it out in private. That’s not happening or was not possible — thus this is not good for the NRA.

“$200,000 of wardrobe purchases by LaPierre that were charged to a vendor”

Large amounts of money can tempt the weak. $200,000 for wardrobe?
What is his salary? He can buy his own clothes, I imagine.

The NRA has always been a sick organization.

I'm a big gun rights guy, but giving Wayne LaPierre my home phone number was one of the stupidest things I've ever done.

The NRA has done a heck of a lot of good for the gun rights cause. The purists are playing right into the left’s hands.

He has been in several questionable battles, the most notable when he started attacking Neil Knox. Mr. Knox was an ABSOLUTISTS on the 2nd amendment. So am I.

I dropped my NRA membership several years ago when they endorsed all the Dem incumbents in the NEW MEXICO elections.

I told the NRA : Why do you think these Dems will support the 2nd when they don’t even believe in the Constitution to BEGIN with???

It is excessive. I’ve never spent more than $150,000 on my wardrobe . . ever.

If the management is bleeding the organization for personal gain, and just raising dues it makes it hard for younger people’s ability to join. Ollie North has a lot of history for integrity. I’m a life member and will wait to see how this sorts out. The NRA survives by it’s members. That requires high levels of integrity from everyone. I hope this isn’t mismanagement.

It’s good to have an experienced person at the helm. But years and years in office can make a person arrogant, and entitled. That’s why term limits are always a good thing.

NRA needs to be reorganized with new blood or it will be dead in a few short years.

Thanks for sharing the excellent article.

Being a student of Sun Tzu for many years, I always look at the original source of the conflict within, not just the visible.

Fiscal responsibility is the source of health to an organization, just as proper diet and exercise is to a human. I agree with the article in identifying the problem as a 30 million deficit as a problem, but amputation may not be the best solution.

In any event, transparency is first required to identify the problem to surgically correct the wounds.

FYI - The NRA was front and center in it's support for the NFA '34. NRA Supported the National Firearms Act of 1934

So, run an audit— like any professional organization would do.

Sounds like that’s EXACTLY what North is doing and “things” are turning up. North is a “straight arrow” who runs a tight ship.

Does sound like a good financial audit is in order. Which is probably a good idea with any organization.

However, if all this is based on an article in “The New Yorker”, which is possibly the slimiest leftist magazine that good wood pulp was ever wasted on, I am inclined to doubt there is any actual problem at all.

Every year at about the time of the NRA’s annual convention, there are always these stories about “the NRA is collapsing”, the NRA’s membership is dropping”, “internal dissent at NRA”, blah, blah, blah..... They only wish.

This is all just Lilliputians pissing on Gulliver’s shoes.
